PAPERS

During the semester, all students will write three papers. Each will be a three-page, double-spaced, and word-processed essay based upon the assignment for one or more of our discussions or the websites linked to lectures or e-lectures. Specific guidelines are available in the Coursebook. See also The New St. Martin's Handbook, Parts 8-10 or A Writer's Reference, pages 295-443. The essay must be completed and turned in by the due date, and must be based on material in the assignment. Students may choose to write a fourth paper, based upon one of the discussions later in the course, to replace the grade on one of the first three papers.

Both concept and technique determine the paper's grade. That is, superior papers must display an understanding of the material, thoughtful and creative analysis of it, standard English (which includes spelling, word choice, correct sentence structure, verb forms, punctuation, capitalization, other matters of mechanics), proper citation form and careful proofreading. Students whose paper exhibits serious problems will be referred to the Academic Support Center or the course assistant for help.

As the chief purpose of these assignments is to gain experience using primary sources, papers that fail to use primary sources will be returned to the student for rewriting.
