History Department Scholarships, and Internships and Awards

Scholarships

Michael B. Petrovich Memorial Scholarship -- This scholarship is paid annually from an endowed fund created by friends, colleagues, and students of the late member of the Department of History. Its purpose is to aid students who plan to spend a semester or year studying abroad. The recipient will be chosen according to the following criteria: academic achievement, place of study and travel, and financial need. This fund was originally created to foster study in Yugoslavia. Preference is now given to students proposing to spend all or part of the study period in Eastern Europe, including Russia or the former Soviet Union. Interested students should obtain application forms from the Fried International Center or the Department of History, which adminsters the scholarship with the participation of Ms. Vesna Crnjanski-Petrovich. Deadline: April 15 for a program starting next fall semester and October 15 for a program starting next spring semester.

Summer Research Scholarship -- This scholarship is designed to help support a student who is engaged in collaborative research with a member of the History department faculty. It is more likely to be awarded to a rising junior or senior. Contact the chairperson of the department, Professor Gibbs, for further information.

Ramaker Scholarship -- Provides financial assistance to an entering student with demonstrated academic achievement and leadership potential, intending to major in history. Deadline: February 15th, announcement by March 1. For further information read on >.

Internships

The department actively assists students in finding internships in local businesses, museums, and other institutions. Employers recognize that history students have good writing skills and understand how to research and organize material. Students interested in an internship should contact the chairperson, Professor Gibbs, for assistance.

Awards

Each year the History Department offers awards to students who have excelled in various aspects of their work. The students need not be History majors to qualify for the awards. Winners of the awards are announced at the annual Honors Convocation in April.
