Frequently Asked Questions

"What is kinesiology?"

Kinesiology is the study of human movement.  There are many branches of kinesiology, but at Hope College we specialize in athletic training, exercise science, and physical education.  For more information on these academic major, please visit www.hope.edu/academic/kinesiology/program.htm.

"How do I declare a major in one of the academic programs in the Department of Kinesiology"

It depends on the program.  Students interested in majoring in athletic training must go through an application and interview process – ideally in their senior year of high school (www.hope.edu/academic/kinesiology/athtrain/appl). Those wishing to major in physical education should submit a major declaration form (www.hope.edu/admin/registrar/FormsPDF/MAJOR_DEC.pdf) with the understanding that they will need to meet the requirements of the Education Department to be eligible for the teacher education program (www.hope.edu/academic/education). Prospective exercise science majors can simply complete and submit the major declaration form mentioned above.  If in doubt, contact the department chair (northuis@hope.edu).

"Why is Hope's athletic program housed in an academic department? That's a bit different, isn't it?"

You're right, it is different, and for a great reason!  At Hope we want our student-athletes to be coached by highly educated professionals who put the student first in "student-athlete." No less important, we value the experience our professors bring to their teaching that flows from their extensive work with athletes and other physically active people.

"What sports does Hope College offer?"

Hope College sponsors varsity teams in 18 intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division III level – nine for women and nine for men. A number of sports also offer JV teams. For more information on each of our teams, please visit www.hope.edu/pr/athletics.

"I'd like to participate in sports in college, but I don't think I can commit to being on a varsity team. Is there anything for me at Hope?"

Hope College has an extensive offering of intramural sports. In fact, about half of the student body participates in Hope's IM program. For more information, take a look at www.hope.edu/student/development/intra.  Hope also offers competitive club sport opportunities in ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, sailing, and pom pon. For more information, check us out at www.hope.edu/admissions/activities/descriptions.html.

"Does Hope College offer athletically-related scholarships?"

No, as a member of Division III of the NCAA, Hope does not offer athletic scholarships.  It does offer merit-based scholarships, however, to all prospective students who qualify through their academic credentials and achievements. For more information, please visit the Admissions Office website (www.hope.edu/admissions).
