STUDENT-FACULTY RESEARCH

back to December 2002 frontpage

The Hacimusalar Project continues to involve DePauw students as partners in archeological work in Turkey, under the general direction of Prof. Ilknur Özgen of Bilkent University. Drs. PEDAR FOSS and REBECCA SCHINDLER join four students from DePauw in the excavation of Hacimusalar mound & survey of the region. Also on the team are students & faculty from Holy Cross College and Sunoikisis (Associated Colleges of the South).

Continued unrest in the region has suspended Macalester College's dig at Omrit in Israel. However, another opportunity in archeology will be opening up for Macalester students in the summer of 2003, with the excavation of an early Roman cemetery at Kenchreai in Greece, under the direction of a newcomer to Macalester's Classics department, JOSEPH RIFE.

TOM SIENKEWICZ is committed to including Monmouth students in his research. For the second year in a row at the Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South, MARTY PICKENS joined Tom in delivering a paper on the intersection of classical mythology and pop music. This year's presentation at the April meeting in Austin, TX was entitled "The Darker Side: The Use of Classical Mythology in Rock Music of the Late Twentieth Century". In the summer, at the annual American Classical League Institute (Madison, WI), Tom, senior JENNIFER MITTEN, and junior MICHAEL FANUCCE presented the workshop "Using Forum Romanum in the Classroom" to an audience of 75.
