Your two battalions meet up with the 4 BCC and enter their assigned ambush positions. To the NW you hear the sounds of a muffled firefight and artillery, though all is peaceful around you. 4 BCC has orders to support you and is mixed in with your infantry except on the far left flank, where the inf. is up on a hill that the armor cannot support you in (too steep for them).
In the increasing light, you take elements of the German forces under fire, driving back yet another platoon and apparently inflicting casualties. Effective artillery was called by the spotter, hitting whatever German units were still in view. Some have retreated to the small woods to the NE of your position (about 800m or so away). German small-arms fire began to zero in on your positions, causing some casualties.
A group of Germans was observed to enter the bldg. in 7.30, though effective fire could not be brought to bear in time.
German artillery landed in the far eastern corner of your orchard line. Apparently it conjured up memories of the Great War, because your reservists there bolted immediately, losing a number of men to the barrage. The platoon and supporting MG units are in confusion near the rear of your formation. Other units near the barrage are pinned down.
Just before the barrage, German units were observed to have entered the Bois de l'Enange Fourchu to the east, approximately around 11.28. Strength unknown.
Your co. of tanks links up with 1-2/205 as ordered at the base of the hill in the woods. You spread out to offer support to the infantry. All is quiet in your neck of the woods.
Your unit is in motion, lead elements have crossed the open area into the woods, while the main body is still moving.
The 3/205 continues to be engaged. They called 3 artillery missions, which seemed to have some effect, and were also hit by German artillery and small-arms fire. You get the message that 4 BCC and 1-2/205 have linked up in their assigned positions. Your lone spotter on the road to Stonne reports sounds of tank movement far off to the East, but has not established visual contact with any German units. He also reports hearing heavy engine sounds to the North somewhere towards the Huttes area.
Your battalion has cleared Huttes d'Ogres (there was no resistance). They are now preparing to execute phase II of their instructions.
You are in contact with the Stu. Pio. to the west.
No other sign of the enemy. You hear artillery fire to the west.
You bn. advances to the edge of the woods and links up with a platoon of tanks from II-8. Your mortars are in position, ready to lay a smoke barrage to cover the advance across the gulley into the woods to the east of Stonne. Contact with II-8 was around hex 42.20.
No other sign of the enemy. You hear artillery fire to the west.
9th co. is heavily engaged, receiving more small arms and MG fire from the orchard. Another platoon was hit out in the open and withdrew to the woods to the NE. You returned fire into the orchard, but the effects are unknown. One free platoon managed to make it to the bldg. in 7.30. The co. is in considerable confusion, though still able to fight. 10th co. responds to their new instructions, advancing south and west into the woods. They expect to be able to attack in a few more minutes. The arty observer attached to them moved into position to observe the right flank of the orchard position, and called in effective artillery fire there.
11th co. is continuing their southward advance through the woods oriented along the N/S tertiary road.
The mortars of the 12th co. felt too exposed to possible air attack in their positions in the open, and moved to covered positions in the woods along the route of advance of 11th co. They are now able to support the 9th co. as per their instructions.
Your 2 field guns moved into their positions (apparently undetected) and are now ready to support the 9th co.
You get the report that II-8 and II/GD have effected a link-up and are now operating together. I/GD has cleared Huttes (there was no resistance) and is preparing to execute phase II of their instructions. III/GD is heavily engaged, receiving French arty and small-arms fire. One fire mission was requested and executed. The Stu.Pio. are still in motion.
Your unit is heading south as ordered. Your left flank is in contact with the I/GD near Hutte d'Ognes.
You hear heavy artillery fire to the west.
