• Experience the cultural mélange of ancient African traditions transformed by Muslim Occupation and French colonization
• Become part of a Senegalese family by living in their house, learning their language, and sharing in their daily lives
• Learn Wolof, the most commonly spoken language in this dynamic young democracy
• Gain an understanding of contemporary issues in modern Africa (women’s roles, education, development & globalization, traditional ways of life)
• Classes at the CIEE Center or Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD)
• Day and weekend trips to destinations such as Gorée Island, Lac Rose, Toubab Dialaw, and Saint Louis
• Wide range of courses including Beginning Wolof, French, Colonization and Decolonization, Histoire de l’Islam, Environment and Development in Senegal and Sub-Saharan Africa, and Topics in West African History: Atlantic Slave Trade
• Opportunities for service learning and community internships
• Fall semester, spring semester, and academic year programs
•Perform independent research ON LOCATION in a subject area of your choosing
• Intensive French language courses and homestay programs to improve your speaking ability
• Two weeks instruction in Fulfulde, the native dialect
• 6 credit Cameroonian Culture and Development course
• Experience the unique geographical (rainforest, mangroves, savannah, and desert) and cultural (French, British, German, and native) mix that is Cameroon
• Sample topics for independent study include: education in a Cameroonian village, traditional healing, bilingualism and the media, the makossa style of music, oral history of the Bamileke people, influence of oil on Cameroonian economy and society, and parastatal rubber plantations

• Perform independent research ON LOCATION in a subject area of your choosing
• Intensive language courses in both French and Malagasy
• Homestay programs in two different cities and a rural site
• Opportunities for research in Malagasy Culture & Society or Ecology & Conservation
• Experience “unity amongst diversity” as you navigate the myriad cultures and peoples that arrived on this isolated landmass through trade and navigation over the last 2000 years
• Sample topics for study include: role of fady (taboos) in Malagasy life, bilingual education in Madagascar, family planning on the village level, education of street children and orphans, reforestation, coral reef conservation at Ifaty, behavioral ecology of ring-tailed lemurs, and sustainable land use techniques
• Perform independent research ON LOCATION in a subject area of your choosing
• Intensive language courses in both French and Bambara
• Learn about Mali’s storied past and the dynamic influences that will shape its future
• Excursions to Segou, Mopti, Djenne, and Timbuktu
• Live in a rural Malian village for a week and gain knowledge of rural development issues directly from rural Malians
• Sample topics for study include: effects of drought on Sahelian community, Dogon culture, Islam and gender roles in Muslim society, literacy and Malian women, ethnolinguistic study of Bambara proverbs and Malian values, and role of musicians in society

• Arts and Culture seminar where you will learn about the role of Islam in Senegal, the slave trade, traditional musical instruments such as the kora, and traditional and modern Senegalese dances
• Live in Dakar and two rural villages
• Excursions to Sine-Saloum Delta, Goree Island, Saint-Louis, Petite Cote
• Sample topics for study include: ethnomusicology and traditional instruments, role of dance in the ceremonies of the Sereer, griots (musicians, historians, royal advisors, cultural identity and religion, and the talking drum
