About German 201

Course

You will have the unique opportunity of participating in a new German course developed right here at Hope College. It will probably be different from any other language course you have had before, so be ready for something new.

Materials

We will be using a new course curriculum called Weiter geht's! Because it is a 'beta' version (the final version will be published next year), we get it nearly half off. You can pick it up from the main office at the Dept. of Modern and Classical Languages. The cost is $42.40 ($40.00 + tax). You can pay for it in two ways:

Credit card: Go to http://www.evialearning.com and select the online store. Choose 'Weiter geht's! and go through the on-line checkout process. Make sure you select free shipping for Weiter geht's! beta.

Check: You can make out a check for $42.40 to Evia Learning Inc. and leave it with Karen Barber-Gibson in the DMCL office when you get your book.

You will ALSO need to get a paperback German-English dictionary, either from the Hope bookstore or elsewhere. Any dictionary will be fine - the main point is that the books does NOT have a glossary in it, so you'll need a dictionary for times when you are away from a computer.

Quizzes

There will be periodic unit quizzes at times indicated on the syllabus.

Homework

There will be written homework as well as work on computer software that will be available sometime in September (more on that in class).

Grades

Your grade in the course will be based on the following scale:

  • 30% Midterm and final
  • 35% Homework
  • 25% Quizzes and unit tests
  • 10% Class performance
