Gutiérrez Alea, Juan Carlos Tabío,
1994) Cuba - Can two people from diametrically
opposed sides of the political coin be friends?
Apparently so. This Academy Award-nominated dramedy
set during the Cuban Revolution mines the complex
bond between the stick-in-the-mud conservative
David (Vladimir Cruz) and his homosexual, anti-Castro
neighbor, Diego (Jorge Perrugoria). When Diego's
subversive adventures land him in hot water with
the authorities, David decides that friendship
trumps politics.

Name Is Joe) helms this dramatic story about a
Mexican immigrant named Maya (Pilar Padilla) who
arrives in Los Angeles and gets a job as a janitor
in a large office building. After helping a man
(Adrien Brody) evade the building's security guards,
Maya is drawn into the man's world, planting seeds
of unionization among her co-workers. |

and time TBA Todo sobre mi madre (Pedro Almodóvar,
1999) España. An Oscar winner for Best
Foreign Language Film, writer-director Pedro
Almodovar's compassionate tribute to women examines
the life of Manuela (Cecilia Roth), who leaves
Madrid for Barcelona shortly after she witnesses
her son's accidental death. She reunites with
an old friend (Antonia San Juan), a pre-op transsexual
prostitute, who introduces her to Rosa (Penelope
Cruz), a pregnant nun. Their fast friendship
binds them through many struggles.
