Brief Biography
Christine (Tina) Swain is an Assistant Professor of Spanish
Language and Linguistics at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She
earned a B.A. in Italian and Spanish from Middlebury College and an M.A.
and Ph.D. (2003) in Romance Linguistics from Cornell University.
Her interest in Romance languages began when she was a child being raised
in South America by her missionary parents. She was born in Lima, Perú
and then lived in Guayaquil, Ecuador and La Paz, Bolivia until she moved
to the United States for college. Besides Spanish, she has studied
French, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, and Romanian, but due to lack of practice
and opportunity, she only speaks Spanish and Italian now. Her field
of study in Romance linguistics is the comparative development of the
Romance languages from Latin, with special focus on the development of
irregular verb forms.
