Student Stories: Doing

Students exercise their hands

"Gandhi once said, 'I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.' This semester, Gandhi’s philosophy of leadership served as a compass while I simultaneously navigated the roles of leader, citizen, servant, friend, and student. His words even rang true as it concerned the concept of emotionally intelligent leadership presented in class. Understanding myself, others, and context; has required that I form genuine relationships with those that I work with, and has opened my eyes to a whole new world of leadership theory." -- David Paul

"Last semester was the first that I had heard about this concept of servant-leadership. This was a tremendous struggle for me at first, giving up all control, but it has been one of the best decisions I have made. The girls have recognized why I did what I did, and are not afraid to ask me for help. They know this is their show and I am here to support them in it however, I can. My motives have completely shifted. Last year, I wanted “my” production to be a hit, and this year, I want “their” production to be the best the school has seen. Not only has this change in mentality helped me grow as a servant leader, but it has helped Ballet Club as well." -- Sarah Wander

"In the end, my internship experience...was invaluable. Not only did it reiterate and confirm many of my abilities and interests, it also intensified certain desires and skills. It allowed me to gain valuable insight into....administration, and it gave me a clearer understanding of my vocation as well as specific ways to fulfill this vocation. Taken as a whole, I experienced entirely new ways of learning compared to academic-based learning I am used to. I think the internship taught me just as much if not more than any of my other college courses. And for a 'learner' like me, this is an incredibly rewarding thought." -- Leah Van Enk
