CFL's Leadership Minor Mentoring Program
"The mentoring program was extremely helpful for me this semester. I have a much clearer direction of what career path I want to pursue and feel peace about my calling. At my last meeting with my mentor we discussed the huge leap I've made this semester. It's amazing. Thanks for a great program. I think every Hope student should have to go through a mentoring program. It's so helpful!" -- Kristen Marsh
Who Am I? What Will I Do?
The purpose of CFL's mentoring program is to enhance students' personal leadership skills (e.g., listening, discerning, balancing) and habits (e.g, saying "Thank you," seeking the truth, engaging others, etc) and to help them get closer to finding their passion. This includes asking questions such as:
- How could my faith inform my everyday life?
- How do I assess my gifts and purpose? Opportunities?
- How do I find "fit" between who I am and what I do?
To begin, students meet with CFL's Leadership Minor Mentoring Coordinator, Marcia Floding (floding@hope.edu) upon declaration of the Leadership Minor. The Mentoring Program consists of five separate but related activities:
- Part I: Hope students attending two seminars, one on networking and one on professional communications, and meeting at least once per semester with the Mentoring Coordinator; these seminars are normally part of LDRS 201.
- Part II: Hope students being mentored by practitioners (six meetings)
- Part III: Hope students mentoring others (40 hour commitment)
- Part IV: Hope students maintaining a portfolio of their leadership program-related experiences on the web, including their reflection papers for LDRS 201, LDRS 391, LDRS 399, LDRS 401, and Part I and Part II of the Mentoring Program, as well as their networking tool, resume, and cover letter. Students also participate in a "mock" interview and work on creating their "story." The portfolio is audited in the leadership classes listed above, and must be completed before students can graduate from the leadership minor program.
- Before or during students leadership minor experience, students are encouraged to connect with leadership program alumni through the CFL director; after the leadership minor experience, and post-Hope, leadership minor alumni are encouraged to make themselves available to Hope leadership students by contacting the director.
This program is free and is required of students who declare leadership as their minor.
