Student Testimonials
Spring of senior year is inundated with interviews by potential employers. In fact, over the past week, I have sat through three major interviews. The number one question asked was not what my G.P.A. is, though this is important, but instead, what experiences did I have that equipped me to be a better candidate. Notice, I used the word ‘candidate’, not employee. I did this for a reason. Any school can teach you to be an employee, but Hope does something unique; Hope instills in us the knowledge, courage and experience to be leaders. My senior year at Hope has been filled with opportunities beyond my wildest imagination. I have served as an intern with a graphic design firm in Zeeland, conducted a marketing audit on a local television station, acted through an independent study to consult for a Holland church, and contributed research for a book. For the graphic design firm, I worked closely with a partner to explore cutting-edge business models for the firm and acquired invaluable experience researching potential markets, followed by phone calls to specific companies to ‘fish’ for interest. On the marketing audit, I was fortunate enough to lead a talented seven-person team. This was my first real experience leading others and it was fascinating to work with so many unique individuals, each with their own strengths and abilities. My consulting project and research project taught me about the value of self-determination and work ethic.
The ability to work in a team environment is an essential business skill. No matter what type of career one wishes to pursue, there will be team-related tasks. Through my management classes and ISC experiences at Hope College, I have had many opportunities to test the waters of teamwork and to learn what works and what does not. My undergraduate teamwork experience has advanced my ability to cope with people and further my appreciation for how much more a unified team can accomplish than any outstanding individual could do alone.
Working on the various projects that I have has broadened my knowledge and experience in a wide range of areas. Through this, I have been able to test my skills and determine what my strengths and weaknesses are. Each of the projects has also given me the tools I need to excel in a wide range of assignments in the future. I believe I now have what it takes to take on leadership roles and to enhance the effectiveness of those around me. I look forward with confidence to the workplace of the future. |
