Mike Van Lente is a native of Holland, MI and a graduate of Hope College. Growing up in Holland, Mike was a member of school marching bands since the third grade and eventually taught private lessons while attending Hope College. His total experience with the drums extends to over 40 years.
At Hope College, Mike received a minor in music and performed with the Orchestra and Symphonette as well as the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Chamber Ensemble. In 1970, Mike attended the summer program at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for an intensive study of jazz and popular music as applied to the drum set.
Mike feels very fortunate to be performing regularly with area musicians and Hope faculty members and has performed or recorded with guest artists including Clark Terry, Claudio Rhoditi, Fred Hersch, and Jim Snidero. Currently Mike works with his regular trio and plays in the Holland Jazz Orchestra.
He enjoys students of all ages and abilities, especially and including beginners. Mike's current plans include continuing to teach and perform in as many musical settings as possible while maintaining a superb quality family life with his two children who also share in his love for music.
