Hope College Young Artists Piano Competition




  1. Open to high school pianists ages 13-18

    High school graduation must be no earlier than spring of 2014.

    - Applicants should be qualified to enter 9th grade in high school by fall 2013.

    Previous college credit limited to dual enrollment, early admission, and the like.

  2. Open only to pianists living in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, or Wisconsin
  3. Previous First Prize winners may not enter.


1. Preliminary CD (or DVD) (postmarked January 6, 2014):

  • Two or more contrasting solo compositions totaling 10-15 minutes of music.
  • Single movements of sonatas or suites are acceptable (repeats optional).
  • Recorded repertoire need not be the same as the live competition repertoire.
  • Recordings must be an unaltered and unedited representation of the applicant’s playing.
  • Recordings will not be returned.

2. Live Competition (January 25, 2014):

  • Two or more contrasting solo compositions totaling 10-15 minutes of music.
  • Single movements of sonatas or suites are acceptable (repeats optional).
  • Jazz, new age, free improvisation, or pop music is not permitted.
  • Works requiring preparation or amplification of the piano are not permitted.
  • Music from the CD round may be used in the live round.
  • All music must be performed from memory.

  2. Application fee: $30, (make checks payable to Hope College).
  3. Preliminary CD or DVD recording.
  4. Proof of Age: Copy of one: birth certificate, passport, license, or state-issued ID.
  5. Postmark Deadline: Monday, January 6, 2014


  1. A maximum of 15 competitors and 2 alternates will be selected based on submitted recordings, to participate in the live competition at Hope College on January 25, 2014.
  2. Both rounds of the competition will be judged anonymously. Competitor names and teacher names will not be revealed to the judges prior to their decision.
  3. Students of judges are not permitted to enter the competition.
  4. The competition director, Adam Clark, will in no way act as a judge or confer with the judges on their decisions at any point during the competition.
  5. The identities of the judges will not be released until the competition has concluded.
  6. ALL applicants will be emailed their status by 11:59 PM on Monday, January 13, 2014.
  7. The competition is open to the public.
  8. Performance order for the live competition is determined by a random drawing. Time changes are not permitted.


  1. Contestants accepted into the final round are responsible for travel to and from Hope College.
  2. At this time, housing is not provided for finalists traveling to Hope College.
    Contestants should plan to stay at an area hotel. Detailed information on area accommodations will be sent upon acceptance into the finals.
  3. A lunch, sponsored by Hope College, will be provided to all finalists and their family from 11:30-12:30 on the day of the competition. All competitors are expected to attend.
  4. Practice rooms with grand pianos will be available to contestants all day on the day of the competition, as well as the evening prior.


  1. Likenesses of contestants may be used by Hope College in its promotional materials.
  2. Hope College has sole ownership of recordings of this event without obligation to any contestant or any other agency.
  3. All decisions of the judges are final and not open to appeal.
