Music Education Faculty

Christina Hornbach, Associate Professor of Music,Head of Music Education Area

Jim DeBoer, Adjunct Associate Professor of Music

Gabe Southard, Head of Instrumental Music Education
The core curriculum and methods courses provide the knowledge, skills, and opportunities for practical applications out in the schools (a minimum of five field experiences and the student teaching semester). Hope's partnership in music education with the Holland Public Schools, as well as other local schools, affords music education students the opportunity to teach students from a variety of cultures and economic backgrounds from pre-school to 12th grade. Candidates for certification in music education must pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Music Education (Test #99).

Hope College Music Education Students ...

... Practice Early and Often! Every Education and Music Education Methods course includes a field placement out in the surrounding schools, which translates to a minimum of 5 teaching experiences in a variety of school settings BEFORE student teaching.

...Follow a developmental sequence of coursework in which knowledge and skills build from prerequisites, thus providing a strong knowledge and skills base in music and education.

...Experience passionate faculty purposefully MODELING teaching and instructional strategies in methods courses and ensembles for students to use in the schools.
