Mentoring/Advising/Teaching Award

This award will recognize a faculty member who has gone beyond the call of duty of being an exceptional mentor, advisor, and teacher to students. Selection of the recipient will be a student-centered activity. Presidents and vice-presidents of departmental student clubs, or two student representatives from departments without student clubs, will conduct the nomination and selection process. The Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences’ office will supervise the process.

Majors who are upperclassmen in each department will be asked to nominate faculty for the award and submit nomination letters to their student leader. This can include either junior and seniors or just seniors at the discretion of the department chair. Nominations will consist of a ONE-PAGE (maximum) statement. Club presidents and vice-presidents (or student departmental representatives) will solicit recommendation letters from students. Each department can nominate up to two final candidates per year, and the nomination packets MUST be submitted by the student leader to the Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences office by February 9, 2007. Electronic or paper nominations will be welcomed.

Soon after the deadline, the Dean’s office will coordinate a time for the student leaders to meet and select one winner. There will be no more than two representatives for each department. Each club has the opportunity to advocate its candidate to the group at large. The student leaders will then decide on one winner for that year.

Award criteria must include the following:
1. Research mentoring.
2. Advising either: academic, career, or student clubs and organizations.
3. Classroom teaching and instruction.

The 2006-7 award will consist of a cash prize ($500), plus a discretionary fund ($900) for use by the recipient in mentoring/advising/teaching related activities. This award will be made on an annual basis, and the announcement will be made at the spring Division Meeting.
