2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the oldest foundation in the United States devoted wholly to science, and the second-oldest overall (after the Carnegie Corporation). Hope College has played a key role in the history of the foundation.
The foundation, Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA), has awarded 64 grants to faculty members of Hope College, the most of any liberal arts college – tied with Williams, and one more than Amherst and Carleton. The total dollar amount of those grants to Hope College – $1,695,435 – is the largest amount awarded to any liberal arts college in RCSA’s history.
In addition, RCSA’s President James M. Gentile was a member of the Hope College faculty for 29 years and served as the college’s Dean of Natural Sciences for 12 of those years. And Michael P. Doyle, a previous RCSA President, was a Hope College faculty member from 1968 to 1984.
