Teaching Nuclear Science Using Case Studies in Nuclear Forensics
A Workshop for 20 High School Physics and Chemistry Teachers

This workshop is funded by an
American Institute of Physics (AIP)
Meggers Award with equipment with curricular resources provided by the
American Physical Society (APS). It is designed to enhance your teaching background in nuclear physics and chemistry by using hands on materials and activities. Each teacher that participates in session 2 of the workshop will have the opportunity to use a traveling “kit” which contains:
- A Cloud Chamber
- “household” Radiation Sources
- Standard Radiation Shielding Materials

- Vernier Radiation Counters (stand alone or can interface with Vernier Lab Pros)
- Non-regulated low-activity radiation sources (suitable for HS classroom use)

Teachers will receive and keep a notebook and DVD with activities to use with the kit materials. The activities and materials are designed to be used flexibly. The unit could be as short as a few days or as long as two weeks, depending on the needs of the instructor.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided for all registered participants. The workshop will be broken into three sessions. You must attend session 2 in order to check out a nuclear forensics resource kit for use in your classroom.
