An Introduction to Ultrasound Elasticity Imaging

Lee Kiesel

University of Wisconsin

Ultrasonic Imaging has proven to be a useful imaging modality in medicine. Recent research has been aimed at improving ultrasound's performance as well as utility in clinic, including extending ultrasound to measure the elastic properties of tissue. Given that various disease states, such as cancer, alter the normal elastic properties of human tissue, measuring these properties promises to increase the diagnostic utility of ultrasound. An introduction to ultrasound elasticity imaging will be presented with a focus on the research from the ultrasound group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Results from other research groups will also be explored.
