Brief Biography
In 1999, after seven years as director of Hope's Frost Center for Social
Science Research, Charles Green began directing a new initiative at the
college, the Phelps Scholars Program. "PSP" is open to all incoming
Hope students who are interested in issues of race and culture. During
their first year, Phelps Scholars live together in the same residence
hall, take their First-Year Seminar together, and learn how to go about
creating community together. There are between 50 and 60 Phelps Scholars
in a typical year, about half of them White American students and about
half American students of color or international students. Charles has
thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students and has appreciated the
opportunity to apply his professional interests in race and racism in
this very practical way. The only drawback has been that having an office
in the basement of Scott Hall has decreased his opportunities to interact
with the students and faculty in the Psychology Department. His colleagues
there, however, continue to be his primary source of identification and
support on campus.
