"The faculty members of the Hope College Psychology Department are committed to the intellectual and personal development of our students. Through traditional courses, practica and internships, independent studies, and research experiences we help our students learn, grow and mature. It is a tremendously rewarding experience to be a part of this important developmental process."

Patricia Roehling, Psychology Professor

What's So Special About the Psychology Department?

The department's exceptional facilities include multimedia instruction, a psychophysiology laboratory and other computer-controlled laboratories for data collection and analysis. Many students collaborate with faculty in research in much the same way that graduate students do in universities. Each year psychology students are involved in collaborative research and many present their research at professional conferences.

Student StudyingHope's Psychology Department is nationally recognized. Research reported by psychology students at regional and national conventions has been recognized by awards from psychology's national honor society (including Lindsey Root, far right, who received a second place award in a national competition for undergraduate research). Several leading psychology textbooks and multi-media instructional resources are authored by department faculty.

Three members of the department have received the Hope Outstanding Professor Educator Award and one of these three has also received the Provost's Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 one or more students have won the prestigious award for outstanding undergraduate research at the Midwest Psychological Association Convention.
