For Prospective Students

At Hope College and across the country, psychology is one of the most popular majors. Here at Hope we offer a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Many beginning students think that psychology is mainly about the study of abnormal behavior (clinical psychology). When students take courses in Hope's Psychology Department they discover that psychology is this and much more. Our large and diverse eleven-member faculty offers our students a broad variety of classes and research opportunties in areas such as developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, physiological psychology, experimental psychology, and more.

Dr. Pat RoehlingThe Psychology Department takes a three-pronged approach to educating our majors. First, we teach students the basic theories and research methodologies in psychology. Much of this happens in the classroom, but it also occures in one-on-one discussions with students outside of the classroom, in laboratory experiences, and in other assignments. Second, we provide our students practical experiences through practicum and internship courses. Finally, Hope psychology faculty actively involve students in research, which can result in student co-authorship of research presentations and publications. These three prongs combine to provide our majors with an exellent preparation for work, graduate study, and life.
