Name: Paula Van Boxel
Class: 2002
Current Employment: I am a full time social worker, splitting up my time between two nursing homes in Muskegon. I am responsible for completing the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and a Social History with all new residents. I also make a Behavior Monitoring Chart for staff to track mood and behavior issues that residents may have, especially in the Alzheimers population. This helps us determine if a psychotropic medication is warrented for an elderly person, and the documentation can tell us if behaviors are improving or getting worse. Interventions for residents with mood/behavior issues are listed on the Behavior Monitoring Charts to help staff come up with creative solutions. I also help with the discharge plan when a resident returns home, this may include Meals on Wheels and home health care services. Nursing home social workers have to help the resident and their families adjust to this usually unwanted new environment.

Name: Peter Binnie
Class: 2004
Graduate School Information:
I'm just starting grad school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a second-year M.S.W. student right now. Because of Hope's fine classes and accreditation, I was able to get exempt from all but one of the first year classes (an ethnic/racial diversity class, which I clearly would have been exempt from if I had been able to take Melissa's new class!). So I'm in the school concentration and will have an internship as a school social worker this year. Within a year, I will hopefully have my MSW and be licensed as a school social worker. My immediate goal is to try to get a job as a school social worker as soon as I get done here at Madison. Ultimately, I would also like to get into the clinical side of social work.
