S-STEM Scholarship Program in Science at Hope College

The S-STEM Scholarship Program at Hope College is funded by the National Science Foundation. It provides scholarships to students tansferring to Hope from community colleges who demonstrate financial need, enabling them to complete degrees in science, engeineering. or mathematics.

Each year at Hope College up to 8 S-STEM scholarships are awarded to incoming students who meet the program criteria. Renewable for a second year, the S-STEM scholarships provide eligible students up to $10,000 each year toward their tuition, room, and board costs. S-STEM recipients are offered an opportunity to do paid scientific research on the Hope College campus the summer before they transfer. They also take part in a variety of opportunities designed to provide information about S-STEM careers and give students special academic assistance. Awards will be announced after April 1, 2011.

Faculty reference: You must submit the name and email address of at least one faculty member who is willing to serve as a reference for your application. This should be a faculty member at your school, prefererably in a science or mathematics field, who is able to evaluate your ability to succeed at Hope College. You may submit more than one faculty member's name and email address is you wish. Please include the name and email address of your faculty reference in your essay below.

Essay: Please submit an essay in the field below that describes your academic, intellectual, and career goals, any experiences you have had that have contributed to setting and meeting those goals, and how you see this scholarship and attending Hope College helping you meet those goals. You can either type this essay into the space provided or copy it from a word processor.

Application requirements: In addition to submitting the above statement of interest, you must apply for admission to Hope College. Your Hope College application must be submitted by March 1, 2011. If you are admitted to Hope College, you will be contacted to set up a scholarship interview. Interviews will be conducted either in person on campus or by telephone. Decisions on recipients will be made by April 1, 2011.

If you wish to participate in summer research, you must select a project and complete an application through the SHARP system by no later than March 4. If you fail to do this you will be ineligible to participate in summer research though it will have not affect your eligibility for a scholarship. Be sure to mention in your essay for the SHARP system that you are also applying for an S-STEM scholarship.

Eligibility: The eligibility requirements for S-STEM scholarships are set forth by the National Science Foundation. You must intend to complete a major in a science discipline; be a US citizen, national, refugee alien, or permanent resident alien; and be eligible for Federal financial aid as determined by the Hope College Financial Aid Office. To meet the financial aid requirement, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Hope College Supplemental Application as required by the Hope College Financial Aid Office.
