Our religion majors and minor allow our students to prepare for the future, whether a career in Christian ministry, international business, education, nonprofit or government.

Religion Major Programs

BIBLICAL STUDIES

A major in biblical studies is anchored in the study of scripture. The defining texts of Judaism and Christianity are a great starting point for understanding Jewish and Christian history, theology and Christian ethics. This major would be a great fit if you want to enter ministry or as preparation for seminary or graduate school.

CHRISTIAN HISTORY, THEOLOGY, AND ETHICS

A major in Christian history, theology, and ethics focuses on Christian theology, the value of the church and the day-to-day devotion of ordinary believers. Ultimately, you’ll better understand and share in the worship of God and love of your neighbors.

STANDARD RELIGION MAJOR

A standard religion major gives you a broad platform of study from which to engage in an area of interest that fits you. It’s an excellent way to understand and navigate the complex and diverse world in which we live.

RELIGION MINOR

A minor in religion is designed with you in mind. You will engage in questions about faith, scripture and religious diversity across the globe, bringing new perspective to careers such as medicine, art, business or law. Write, read and explore your field with spiritual insight and discernment.

Program Outcomes

B.A. Religion (Standard)

Hope College students completing a religion degree will:

• Read, analyze and interpret religious texts with precision and sympathy.
• Understand and explore how religious traditions shape and are shaped by cultures and contexts.
• Reflect on the relationship of religion and/or theology to cosmos, community, society and self.
• Write a 300- or 400-level paper that embodies sophisticated research and critical thinking at least one of four major fields (Bible, history, theology or world religions).

Biblical Studies

Hope College students completing a biblical studies degree will:

• Read, analyze and interpret religious texts with precision and sympathy.
• Acquire an understanding of biblical literature, including the event stream of biblical history, major figures and core biblical-theological concepts.
• Gain an introductory knowledge of the history of academic biblical scholarship, and practice and apply the major tools of the discipline.
• Write a substantial research paper in the discipline in 300 and 400 level courses.

Christian History, Theology and Ethics

Hope College students completing a Christian History, Theology and Ethics degree will:

• Read, analyze and interpret religious texts with precision and sympathy.
• Examine and evaluate change and continuity in Christianity in specific places, periods and contexts.
• Explore the range of theology and ethics both in their various forms and in the history and development of the global church.
• Write a 300- or 400-level paper that embodies sophisticated historical research and/or theological reflection.
