PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

All ASC programs and services are free of charge.

COURSE TUTORING

The ASC provides individual or small group peer tutoring in most 100- and 200-level courses, as well as select 300- and 400-level courses, on either a long-term or short-term basis. A student interested in receiving tutoring completes an application and returns it to the ASC.

After being assigned a tutor, the students meet on a regular basis to:

Examine Student Learning Strategies
Review Information from Class
Discuss Content of Reading Assignments
Work Through Examples of Homework Problems

Tutors are generally upper-class students, but all have outstanding academic records and faculty recommendations. They are trained in tutoring techniques and work with continuous supervision by the professional staff.

Assignment of a tutor takes at least two working days. Once the match is made, weekly or bi-weekly tutoring sessions are arranged by the tutor and student.

STUDY SKILLS TUTORING, PRESENTATIONS, AND WORKSHOPS

Many students find that, in making the transition from high school to college, or from lower- to upper-level classes, they need advice about studying. One-on-one appointments with an ASC professional are available for advice on the following:

Goal Setting and Motivation
Time Management
Textbook Reading/Studying
Note Taking
Test Preparation/Test Taking

Hope faculty and staff may also arrange study skills workshops or presentations for specific groups or classes.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

ASC staff members are available to meet and talk with students about any question or concern they may have relevant to their college academic experience.

DISABILITY SERVICES

The ASC coordinates the provision of academic support services for students with documented disabilities. The provision of all reasonable accommodations and services is based upon assessment of the impact on the individual’s academic performance at a given time. Therefore, the ASC requires recent documentation relevant to the individual’s learning environment. Information regarding disability is confidential and is available on an as-needed basis to those directly involved in the accommodation process. Students should schedule an appointment with the Coordinator of Academic Support Services for Students with Disabilities to review their documentation and discuss academic accommodations that would be reasonable and appropriate in the college learning environment.

The following information is provided to assist you in learning how to access academic support specific to your disability and to inform you of the documentation needed to put these supports in place. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, individuals with disabilities are guaranteed certain protections and rights of equal access to programs and services. Documentation establishing the presence of a disability and explaining the nature and degree to which the disability affects major life activities including learning is essential for ASC staff to accurately assess a condition and determine what accommodations would most effectively facilitate student learning. Students with disabilities must therefore provide medical/psychological documentation indicating the presence of a disability that substantially limits a major life activity. A medical or osteopathic doctor or other qualified health professional must document mobility, hearing, and visual impairments. A dated and signed report on letterhead indicating the following is generally sufficient:

- The current impact of (or limitations imposed by) the condition
- Treatments, medications, devices or services currently prescribed or used to minimize the impact of the condition
- The expected duration, stability or progression of the condition

An audiogram is required in the case of deafness or hearing loss while a visual acuity and fields report is essential for understanding visual impairments. A licensed psychologist or psychiatrist must document psychiatric disabilities. For learning disabilities a complete copy of the most recent psychological assessment plus a copy of the last IEP report is required. Specific guidelines and forms are available for students with Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Psychological Disabilities, and Chronic Health Disabilities. Forms can be downloaded from this website.
