Coping with Stress

Coping Tips to Manage Stress and Symptoms of Stress

If you feel stressed, here are a few tips to gain control over the aspect of your life that is most out-of-balance. It is possible that you will have to work on one or more categories in order to de-stress. Make your goals realistic!

Physical

  • exercise and eat right
  • take a nap
  • practice relaxation
  • run in the rain
  • take a walk
  • paint your nails
  • play Frisbee golf

Emotional

  • positive self-talk
  • visualize success
  • write in your journal
  • sing!

Social

  • develop friendships
  • LISTEN to others
  • join a group or club
  • volunteer
  • watch a movie with a friend
  • go out for coffee

Intellectual

  • organize and prioritize
  • learn a new skill or hobby
  • read a book(for fun)
  • join a study group
  • call the Academic Support Center for help

Spiritual

  • renewal with nature
  • listen to music
  • set goals
  • seek/enhance faith
  • surrender - say goodbye to a loss or hurt
  • count your blessings
  • pray
  • read the Psalms

Symptoms of Stress

Physical

  • body aches or muscle spasms
  • cold sweaty hands or feet
  • frequent headaches

  • grinding teeth
  • tight neck/shoulders
  • chronic fatigue

Emotional

  • mood swings
  • feeling depressed or anxious
  • irritablility
