Jody Sheldon
Secretary/Receptionist
Jody joined Counseling & Psychological Services staff in October 2000. She handles the scheduling of appointments for all the counselors and assists with various projects. Jody has been with the college since July 1998 and enjoys the college environment and being of service to students.

Kristen Gray, Psy.D., LP, Assistant Dean of Health & Counseling; Director,
Counseling & Psychological Services
Kristen received her Psy.D. degree from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. Her pre-doctoral internship was at Holland Community Hospital's inpatient psychiatric unit. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she worked at the Center for Women in Transition and at Hope College as Assistant director of Career Services. She did her M.A. coursework in College Student Development at Mankato State University. Her undergraduate degree, a B.A., is from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, with a major in Scandinavian Area Studies and a dance minor.

 

Rick Dernberger, M.S.W.
Staff Counselor
Rick officially joined the Counseling & Psychological Services staff during the fall of 2003, although many students got to know him the previous year when he was here as an intern. Rick obtained his Masters in Social Work from Western Michigan University in the spring of 2003. Prior to obtaining his MSW, Rick graduated from Hope with a business related degree, and had a 15-year career in banking. Rick enjoys working with students on a wide variety of issues.

Ziyah Dock, MA, LPC, CAADC
Staff Counselor
Ziyah joined the Counseling & Psychological Services staff in October 2001. She has a Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University in Professional Counseling. Her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree is from Grand Valley State University and Associates of Arts degree from Grand Rapids Community College. Ziyah previously worked at a child and family service agency as a counselor/social worker and as a substance abuse counselor at Longford Care Unit. She is also a Certified Addiction Counselor and Auricular Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist. Other experiences include working with Community Mental Health specializing in outpatient services and crisis intervention, and Rose Haven Ministry as a counselor addressing women issues, and juvenile corrections.

Diane Wiersma, LMSW, ACSW
Staff Counselor

Diane joined the Counseling and Psychological Services in January 2011. Diane is a licensed clinical social worker and has a Masters in Social Work from Western Michigan University. Her undergraduate degree is from Calvin College, where she majored in psychology. Following undergraduate work, Diane taught for several years in New Jersey and Arizona, and has her teacher certification from Trenton State University. As a social worker, Diane has worked in college counseling, community counseling, and hospice settings. She enjoys working with students on a variety of issues. Areas of special interest include: depression, mood disorders, anxiety, grief, trauma, life transitions, and emotional wellness. In addition to being at Hope part-time, Diane is in private practice in Holland.

Denise DeJonge , MSW, LLMSW
Staff Counselor
Denise joined the Counseling & Psychological Services Staff in the Fall of 2008. She has a Master's Degree in Social Work, with a School Social Work Certification from Western Michigan University. She has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from GVSU. Denise has experience working with adult and child victims of Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault, Gifted & Talented, Trauma, Learning Disabilities, and Socio-Emotional issues. Denise loves to travel with her family, and highly promotes responsible social tourism.
