Homeownership is an indicator of educational level, crime and neighborhood stability. Given the same income and length of residence, children of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate from high school and 116% more likely to graduate from college than children of renters. They are less likely to be arrested, and they have fewer teen pregnancies (Boehm and Schlottman cited in The Crisis in America's Housing). With homeownership rates used an indicator for Ottawa County neighborhoods with children at higher risk, then a map of the county's homeownership rates can provide information that contributes to an assessment of neighborhood environments and targeted locations for resources that encourage the positive youth development. Map your community is an exciting and dynamic feature provided on the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website. Zoom in on your neighborhood and additional legend options are hotlinked to your custom map. A HUD User web page provides links to various data sets. |
