NOROVIRUS

Intervention Recommendation & Clean-up Guidance
The following is a list of interventions to address the outbreak on the Hope College campus.

Stay home if you are feeling ill. Remember that norovirus is easily transmitted to others. Avoid contact with others and remain home for 36 hours after most recent incident of vomiting or diarrhea. This includes classes, practices, and events.

Promptly disinfect contaminated surfaces, linens, and clothing.
Clean all hard surfaces with a bleach based cleaner or use 1/3 cup bleach to one gallon of water. Leave the solution on the surface for 20 minutes before rinsing with clean water.
Wash all clothing and linens contaminated with vomit or feces with bleach based detergent.
If you choose to discard them, contaminated clothing or linens should be double bagged, sealed, and discarded in a dumpster.

Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly after touching anything that may be contaminated.
Wet hands with warm water
Wash with soap (scrub hands and exposed wrists for 20 seconds)
Rinse off soap with clean-running water
Wipe hands dry with paper towel (turn off sink faucet handle with a paper towel)

Personal dorms areas:
You are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing your personal space and personal items such as: door handles/knobs, computer keyboards, telephones and cell phones, light switches, chairs, and desks.
Remember: Norovirus can survive for up to 10 days on hard surfaces. Hard surfaces can become recontaminated. Clean all hard surfaces with a bleach based cleaner or use 1/3 cup bleach to one gallon of water. Leave the solution on the surface for 20 minutes before rinsing with clean water.
Special note to those employed or volunteering in foodservice, daycare, health care, teaching, and other public service industries: Stay home if you are feeling ill.
Remain home for 72 hours after most recent incident of vomiting or diarrhea. This includes classes, practices, and events.

ATTENTION STUDENTS

We need your help! This has been and continues to be a very busy year for us at the Health Center. Appointments fill up very quickly and we often have to make students wait until the next day to be seen. Problems arise when we have students who don't show up for their appointments, or who show up late. This means that we turn away patients who could have been seen and then no one shows up, or the late arriving student throws off the whole rest of the schedule.

PLEASE BE COURTEOUS TO YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS BY ARRIVING ON TIME AND ALSO BY CANCELLING APPOINTMENTS THAT ARE NO LONGER NEEDED.

Hot Topics!

Flu Vaccine is now available!
Call now to schedule your shot, or check out the painless nasal mist! (395-7585)

What can you do to protect yourself from communicable diseases?

• Wash your hands thoroughly before eating, touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Cough into the “crook of your arm” to decrease the spread of viruses with your cough.
• Use disposable tissues with sneezing – and dispose of them properly.
• Keep your immune system healthy! Get adequate sleep, water and a variety of healthy foods to help your body develop a strong defense.
