Hope Health Center Out of Class Policy

An Out- of-Class E-mail is a way for the Hope Health Center medical staff to notify professors regarding a medical concern that could result in a student being absent for three or more days. An Out-of-class E-mail does not mean that a student cannot attend class. If a student has been issued an Out-of-Class E-mail by the health center, it becomes the student's responsibility to contact their professors to discuss how their class responsibilities can be accomplished despite their condition.

Common situations where an Out-of-Class E-mail would be issued include, but are not limited to:

• Mono or mono-like illnesses
• Influenza (positive test in clinic)
• Inpatient hospitalization
• Mental health

The health clinic staff will not routinely write "notes" for students stating they are currently ill or have been ill in the past. In special situations, when the student has already been seen at the health center, they have the option of signing a release of information so that specific medical information concerning their office visit and condition can be shared with professor(s) if needed.

The Hope Health Center staff may encourage students who have a positive test for influenza, or other communicable diseases, to not attend class, social activities and work. This is to help decrease the spread of disease on campus; for students, staff and faculty! It is the student's choice if they will follow this advice.

It is rare that a student will be told they may not report to any classes. Conditions that could result in a "May Not Attend Class" statement include, but are not limited to:
• active tuberculosis
• active chickenpox
• active mumps

Please call the health clinic if you have any concerns regarding the above information. It is our goal to keep students healthy and in class!

Please, do not send students to the health center after an illness when they have not used the Hope Health Center for treatment.
