TEAGLE COURSE DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Summer 2010
I. BASIC INFORMATION

Eligibility:
open to all full-time regular faculty, including full-time adjunct faculty;
visiting faculty with a contract for the following year may also apply;
priority is given to tenured and tenure-track faculty.
NOTE: TO BE ELIGIBLE, APPLICANTS MUST HAVE FILED A
REPORT FOR THE MOST RECENT SUMMER GRANT THEY RECEIVED.

Grant
Period: One or two weeks (not to exceed eight weeks when combined with another summer grant;
May Term has been excluded from the calcuations).

Maximum
Grant: $900 - two weeks at $450 per week - paid as a stipend on July 15 (will be considered as part of the $4,000 cap on summer grants which includes other summer support from internal or external
sources).

Purposes
for Grants: Funding for one or two weeks of summer work on course innovations aimed at developing new course modules or pedagogical strategies that are likely to:
- Foster more student curiosity
- Foster more student openness to new ideas
- Increase student desire and ability to meet and exceed high academic expectations
- Improve writing instruction and foster stronger student writing

Exclusions:

These grants are not intended to support routine preparation for teaching
new courses, which is assumed to be a contractual obligation of all
faculty.
- Grant awards are
contingent upon continued membership in the faculty during the following
academic year; therefore, persons who resign from the faculty are ineligible
to receive a grant.

Deadline: January 11, 2010
II.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
- Complete the information
requested on the application cover sheet. Answer all items (write "N/A" if it does not apply to your project).
- On separate sheets,
write a brief but comprehensive and clear description of the proposed work. Given the nature of these grants, strong writing and a format that fosters curiosity or displays creativity will strenghten the proposal. Proposals should include:
- Summary
of the project, not to exceed one page, in lay terms.
- Background,
including how the proposed work would change your course (e.g. how your future practices would differ from and improve your past practices) and how this work builds on your past efforts to improve student learning outcomes in your courses. if possible, supply assessment data (e.g. from Hope's Wabash project or from SALT) that supports the claim that the area addressed by your project needs to be strengthened.
- Goals and
objectives for improved student learning outcomes.
- Plan of work:
What background reading and investigation of best practices do you plan to pursue? How do you plan to use your time (this would be especially relevant if you are requesting two weeks of support rather than one)?
- Assessment:
What measures do you plan to use to evaluate whether your innovations have produced improved student learning outcomes?
**Application length must not exceed 3 pages and must be at least 11 point font. Applications that do not meet these criteria will be returned**
- Submit one
copy of your application to the Office of the Provost, your Academic (Divisional) Dean and Carol Simon, Director of the Teagle Systematic Improvement Project, Dept. of Philosophy. Applications should be submitted electronically.
III.
FINAL REPORT REQUIRED

Resulting assignments or modules should be submitted to the Director of the Teagle Systematic Improvement Project for posting on the Hope Curiosity and Writing website. A report on how the objectives of the project have been met should also be submitted to the
Office of the Provost, your Academic Dean and your Department Chair. Electronic submission is preferred.
