Preparing for Emergencies

1. Read the Recommended Procedures for Emergency Notification in the Risk & Responsibility Handbook.
2. Share program leader contact phone numbers with students.
3. Choose a designated student to know the emergency procedures in case you are not available.
4. Convey the local emergency number.
5. Obtain student cell phone numbers.
6. Create a communication tree for students.
7. Implement the “Buddy System.”
8. Advise students to never leave their residence without ID and money.
9. Designate a primary meeting place.
10. Designate a secondary meeting place.
11. Create an emergency plan.

Responding to Medical Emergencies

1. Seek appropriate medical care.
2. Notify Campus Safety (24 hours): 616-395-7770 with your location and status.
3. Campus Safety will notify the appropriate College officials.
4. Maintain consistent communication with the College.
5. Protect the student’s right to medical privacy.

 
Responding to General Emergencies

1. Secure a safe location.
2. Contact or respond to directions of local authorities.
3. Notify Campus Safety (24 hours): 616-395-7770 with your location and status.
4. Campus Safety will notify the appropriate College officials.
5. Wait for further instructions from the College.
6. Communicate instructions to students.
7. Maintain consistent communication with the College.
