College Level Examination Program

The CLEP exam is offered at Hope College to currently registered or deposit-paid Hope students only. The exam is a computer-based exam given via an internet link with the College Board.

IF YOU ARE NOT A CURRENT HOPE STUDENT, you cannot take the exam at Hope College. Complete step 1 below then contact an OPEN testing center to schedule your exam.

Students who have had excellent preparation in one of the subject areas below may wish to register for the exam. Students who score at or above the cut-off level indicated on the chart will be granted credit toward their degree, and, in many cases, will fulfill core requirements as well.

The maximum amount of credit by examination that may be applied toward the 126 hours for graduation is 32 hours, 8 of which can be in the major area of concentration. Please read carefully the Credit By Examination section in the current college catalog when considering credit by examination.

  • How to register:

Step 1. Register online directly with the College Board, at which time you will pay an $80.00 examination fee. The College Board will send you a receipt of payment.

Step 2. Contact the Registrar's Office to make an appointment to take the exam. You will need your receipt from the College Board to make an appointment. On the day of your appointment, you must pay an additional $16.00 administrative fee (cash or check only) to Hope College.

  • Tests are a computer-based exam using a direct internet link. Scores are available upon completion of the exam, except for the College Composition exam, which takes 4-6 weeks to be scored by the College Board.
  • Registrants should report to the Registrar's Office, DeWitt Center, 1st floor, at their scheduled appointment time.

*There is only one exam per language and credit is granted based on score and course completed. For example, a score of 50 on the French exam gives the possibility of earning 8 credits (101 & 102). However, if credit has already been earned for 102, only 4 hours will be granted (101). Likewise, a score of 62 on the same exam will give the potential for 16 hours of credit, less credit already earned for any of the courses.
