Residential Life and Housing

Policies and Procedures

The policies and procedures at Hope College are designed to enhance the campus environment and are provided in a spirit of consideration for others. The answers to the most common questions about Hope policies are found below. For a complete listing of the College’s policies and procedures visit The Office of Student Development.

What are the on campus living requirements?
Students must live in campus housing facilities unless they meet specific criteria. Students eligible for off-campus housing are:

- those with commuter status
- those with 75 credit hours or more
- those who are married

I heard Hope is a "dry" campus. What does that mean?
Hope College does not allow alcoholic beverages on any part of college property. Any alcohol found on campus or in campus residence facilities, is confiscated and disposed of by the Residential Life Staff or Public Safety.

Do I have to have special permission to allow someone of the opposite gender in my room?
Visitation hours (commonly known as "parietals") govern the visiting privileges of members of the opposite gender in college owned living units. These hours exist to help create a safe, private, and quiet atmosphere in which students live.

Visitation hours are as follows:
Sunday – Thursday: 10:00 a.m.– 12:00 a.m.
Friday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m – 2:00 a.m.

Living units' residential assistants and directors monitor visitation hours. If broken, disciplinary actions are taken.
