Campus Security

Hope College is committed to maintaining a safe campus environment for its students, faculty, staff, and guests. The mission of Hope’s Department of Campus Safety is to contribute to the quality of college life by fostering a stable environment in which security is balanced with freedom of movement on an open campus. With this in mind, Hope provides campus security protection 7 days a week, 24 hours a day through the following measures:

  • Campus Safety Department: Trained officers patrol the campus on a 24 hour basis and respond to calls pertaining to criminal acts, traffic and parking violations, violations of college regulations, along with calls for medical assistance, building security, escorts, and an assortment of services. The department works closely with the Holland City Police Department and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies in Ottawa County and is a member of the Ottawa County Central Dispatch Authority.
  • Campus Shuttle Service: Campus Safety provides a Shuttle Van service for students within the campus area during evening and early morning hours for the fall and spring semester periods.
  • Emergency Telephones: Exterior security phones are installed outside the main entrances of residence halls and at several strategic locations on campus. Interior security phones are installed inside academic buildings and in all elevators.
  • Campus Housing Security: A computer monitored card-access and/or touch-code control system is installed on the exterior doors of all residence halls. Resident Directors and Student Resident Assistants reside in and monitor residential facilities. All Residence Life Staff members undergo training in enforcing residence policies and security measures.
  • Academic Building Security: Academic buildings are locked at scheduled times at night. Six of the academic buildings are equipped with computer monitored card-access control.
  • Educational Awareness Programs: The Office of Special Programs, a part of the Student Development Department, coordinates various awareness programs during the academic year, including National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Sexual Assault Awareness Series, and BACCHUS (a student alcohol education group).
