What Students Say

Miluska Monroy
Peru
(1998)

Miluska Monroy     "It was a mixture of excitement and intrigue," says Miluska Monroy, as she reflects upon her arrival at Hope after traveling from her home in Peru.

Miluska's decision to study abroad was influenced by her love of learning and desire to continue her education. She's pursuing English and international studies majors at Hope, and between her academic work and immersion in a new culture, Miluska feels she is receiving an all-encompassing education.

"It's a matter of learning about different cultures and the people," she says, "the different idioms you never pick up in a book."

Along with her study of English, Miluska also speaks Spanish, her first language, and is pursuing a French minor. "I chose to study languages because you learn how they shape a culture," she says. "You learn to understand, in a deeper way, people's feelings and emotions." Hope has provided opportunities for Miluska to carry out her love of learning. "For the experience I wanted, Hope was an environment where everything was captured," she reflects. "I've always loved diversity and by trying different classes I think I have gotten the best of what Hope has to offer. Being willing and try new things has helped me get the most out of my education here."

She encourages others to push themselves similarly by experiencing the college's breadth. "If you really put in the effort and meet the challenges head-on, you can get the real flavor of the school."

Miluska has learned a great deal that cannot be found in books from the people she has meet and the friendships she has made. "My motto has always been to be open-minded to any situation and have the willingness to share of oneself," she says. "Every person is so unique and has so much to give." The continuation of her pursuit of knowledge has been rewarding for Miluska. "it's been really enriching in the academic as well as spiritual areas for me. When you are outside of your country and away from your family, you realize what you value. These past years have been a time for me to re-evaluate and reaffirm my morals, my foundations and how I have been brought up. If people want to enrich themselves, I think Hope can truly provide an atmosphere to pursue that."
