We are enjoying a busy summer at Hope College. Campus remains an active place even without the presence of the majority of the students. Hope has a vibrant student research program during the summer which involves hundreds of students and faculty members in the sciences. It is one of the largest programs in the country. Campus is also host to numerous youth summer camps. Not a week goes by without a dancer, cheerleader, football, basketball or soccer player utilizing the resources of the college. We have visitors come weekly for the Hope Summer Repertory Theatre and the excellent productions it offers. The Haworth Center is also home to a number of conferences and seminars, including the Midwest Brain and Learning Institute which brought educators from across the Midwest to campus. It is rewarding to see people, alumni included, who come to campus to visit or bring their sons and daughters to Hope. Whether it is for orientation, camps or conferences, the response is frequently the same: an appreciation for the beauty of campus; the strength of the infrastructure; and the quality of the facilities. I encourage you to look through some programs and photo galleries on the Hope website. Hope has valuable and varied programs that create unique and meaningful experiences for students, families, alumni and friends. Here are some helpful links: Photographic

If anyone is a fan of the hit reality show The Amazing Race there is no doubt you already know our feature Hope alumna and her younger sister. Lauren Bransen, Class of 2005, and her sister Lindsay, Class of 2007, joined older sister, Elizabeth, and father, Walter, to compete in the family edition of the CBS show The Amazing Race. The Bransens showed the world the meaning of teamwork and the strength of a positive attitude, and at the end of the race the family finished in second place; just seconds behind the winners. For both Lauren and Lindsay, the experience on the reality show was incredible; almost surreal. After passing a lengthy audition process, the family was whisked away under complete secrecy to begin filming. Lindsay came up with an elaborate story for her friends back at Hope and shocked them when she returned from summer vacation with her exciting story. The Race took one month to film. They were allowed to take only what they could carry and no traveling aides of any kind; such as money, credit cards, compasses or maps. "What you see is exactly what happens. There are no retakes", said Lindsay of the show. From the first challenge to the last roadblock the family had a great time. Since returning from the show, the family had some opportunities to participate in charitable fundraisers and radio talk shows and was featured in their local newspaper. Lauren, a communications major and business management minor, is working as an account manager and a sales associate for a company in Chicago. She lives with some of her Sibylline sorority sisters in an apartment in the city and enjoys the culture and diversity available there. She participated in the Chicago semester while at Hope and feels that it may have been the most helpful experience to prepare her for life and work. Lauren also took advantage of the overseas study options at Hope by going to the Vienna Summer School. As far as her Hope experience goes, Lauren says "Hope has so much to offer in the classroom, travel and extra-curricular activities... I couldn't have asked for a better experience". Lindsay,
on track to graduate this spring with a major in social work, has also
loved her Hope experience. She found out about the college through her
sister and loves the small campus and close connection she has with her
professors. She recently joined Dr. Harvey Blankespoor and a number of
alumni, friends and students, for a study tour in Africa and is also a
member of the Sibylline sorority. According to Lindsay, "Hope has
made me more aware of my surroundings... (it) has helped me believe more
in myself...". This summer, Lindsay is heading home to work at a
camp for autistic children for the fourth year in a row. After Hope she
is hoping to attend graduate school in Illinois.
