| Dear Alumni,
Since the last newsletter, many exciting things have taken place
at Hope. We started another academic year and brought in an outstanding
class of freshman, we held the 108th Pull, dedicated the Martha
Miller Center for Global Communication, and we celebrated Homecoming.
We have new leadership in key positions around campus like Trygve
Johnson as the Dean of Chapel, Scott Wolterink as Vice President
of Advancement, Tom Bylsma as Vice President of Finance, and Moses
Lee as the Dean of Natural Sciences. It is simultaneously refreshing
and sobering to appreciate all that Hope has been and all that
it will be.
The turning of the season is a visual reminder of the ever changing
world in which we live. Everyone is anticipating the climate change
and preparing for the cold months ahead. Like changing with the
season, so to do we respond to changes in technology, changes in
the world, and changes within our own lives. How we respond to
change, whether it is staying the course of proven success or adapting
in anticipation of new needs, is constant work. Many things that
make Hope beloved are the experiences that stay consistent year
after year, both for students and alumni. I think about how to
maintain that balance between tradition and innovation on a daily
basis. I know that same thought is in the minds of many with respect
to the academic integrity, spiritual life, and the overall community
of Hope College.
I am looking forward to the future, knowing that together we can
continue to make Hope College and a Hope education as strong tomorrow
as is at was yesterday and is today.

Sincerely,
Mary Boelkins ’96 Remenschneider

The
Sophomore Class of 2008 took home the 108th Hope
College Pull tug-of-war victory on Saturday, September 24, beating
out the Freshman Class of 2009 by 20 feet, 1 inch.
The Pull, first held in 1898, is an annual fall highlight at Hope. In the competition,
freshman and sophomore teams, entrenched in shallow pits on opposite sides
of the river, attempt to gain the most rope through their strength and stamina.
Each team has 18 students on the rope as "pullers" and another 18
acting as guides and morale boosters, or "moralers." The freshmen
are coached by the junior class while the sophomores are instructed by the
seniors. The coaching arrangement also leads to a rivalry between the even-year
and odd-year classes.
Through the years, the sophomores and even-year classes have held the edge
in the win-loss column. Since 1909, the sophomores have taken 59 contests to
the freshman class's 29, and the even-year/odd-year split for the same period
is 52 to 36.

Alumni Profile
Josh Schicker

Background
Josh
Schicker graduated with the Hope College Class of 1999. While
at Hope, Josh majored in Religion and minored
in History. On his free time, he participated in Nykerk, the
Fellowship of Christian Students, and worship service for chapel.
Currently, Josh works at Faith Reformed Church in Zeeland as
the Director of Contemporary Worship. “My favorite part
about my job is that I am a professional musician of some sort.
Creating music is very exciting!”
Giving Back
Josh is still active around the
Hope College community. Recently, Josh performed his music in
the Chapel. Originally,
Josh had simply just planned to perform for the students and
promote his third CD, but after the devastation of Hurricane
Katrina, the concert was turned into a benefit concert for the
Katrina Relief Fund.
In addition to being active around Hope’s
community, Josh is active in his own community as well. Volunteering
at his church, playing gigs around town, and mentoring kids at
public schools through Kids Hope are just a few of the ways Josh
lends a helping hand.

his music career? Check out his website! http://www.joshschicker.com/
