Center City Brass, taking its name from the famous downtown district of Philadelphia in which it was founded in 1985, is quickly earning praise for setting new standards of artistry on brass instruments. The group, consisting of Anthony DiLorenzo, trumpet; Ryan Anthony, trumpet; Richard King, horn; Steven Witser, trombone; and Craig Knox, tuba, boasts first prize from the Coleman Chamber Music Competition and the Carmel Chamber Music Competition in 1988. The members of the quintet have gone on to establish their own careers and assume positions in orchestras around the country, but continue to convene regularly for chamber music making of the highest caliber. Known for their wide range of musical styles-Bach to Bernstein to Bozza-they will also perform a piece, "Firedance," composed by their very own Emmy-award winner, trumpet player Anthony Di Lorenzo. While a fellow at Tanglewood Music Center, Di Lorenzo worked with Leonard Bernstein, who nominated him for an Avery Fisher Career Grant. The quintet's second CD Street Song was recently released on the d'Note Classics label, and features original compositions by Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Bernstein, and Andre Previn. This follows Brass Quintets on Collins Classics, heralded as "one of the all-time great brass recordings" by the American Record Guide.
"This is brass playing that glows,
sings, and abounds in dazzling colors."
