From classical masterworks and operatic arias to "Danny Boy" and gypsy fiddling, Quartetto Gelato is not your traditional classical quartet. Named "Debut Artist of the Year" by NPR's Performance Today in 1996, this Canadian band--composed of Peter De Sotto, Cynthia Steljes, Joseph Macerollo, and George Meanwell--has created a dedicated following with their unique blend of virtuosity, irrepressible energy, and wit. Each artist has mastered multiple instruments; the oboe, violin, accordian, cello, English horn, mandolin, and classical guitar are all part of their eclectic repertoire. Formed in 1994, the recordings of Quartetto Gelato can literally be described as "out of this world," having been taken into space by Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk.
"Quartetto Gelato plays with both the precision expected of a string quartet in Beethoven and the abandonment of gypsies improvising around a campfire." -- Jerome Reed, The Tennessean, Nashville
