Eva Dean Folkert (folkert@hope.edu, 616-395-7694) has been a member of the Hope College staff since 1985. She first held positions in the public relations and registrar offices and since 1997 in the kinesiology department. She served as assistant director of the intramural sports program until 2003 when she was named senior woman administrator for athletics. She was named director of women's athletics and assistant professor of kinesiology in 2005 and promoted to co-director of athletics in 2009. She graduated from Hope in 1983 and received the master of arts in sport management from Western Michigan University in 2005. In 2005 she was presented the college's Vanderbush-Weller Development Fund award for her strong, positive impact on students.She was the women's golf coach from 2005-08. Folkert serves on the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships committee. In 2005 she was the meet manager when Hope College hosted the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships for men and women and served in a similar capacity when Hope hosted the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championships in 2008 and 2009. Folkert was featured in an article in the Winter 2010 issue of the NCAA magazine Champion. The article, "Paths Less Traveled" told the stories of leaders in intercollegiate athletics who came from different walks of life. Her husband Cal is a 1981 Hope College graduate. The Folkerts have two sons, Peter who is a 2011 Hope College graduate and Matt who is a Hope student.
From 1997 until 2000 he was the men's junior varsity basketball coach at Hope while teaching in the Zeeland public schools system. He was employed by the Holland Christian schools from 2000-09. He was named assistant principal and athletic director of Holland Christian High School in 2006. He was the girls' varsity basketball coach at Holland Christian High School for nine years. He was named the Class B coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan in 2008 after his team advanced to the state tournament semi-finals. The 2009 team made it to the quarterfinals with a school-record 21 wins. Schoonveld received the M.A. in sports administration from Western Michigan University in 2005. Schoonveld and his wife, Lisa (Timmer) both grew up in the Holland/Zeeland area. They have four children, Elijah, Ericka, Kenedy and Teagan. Lisa was a standout two-sport athlete at Hope, achieving All-MIAA honors in basketball and softball. |
