Hope Teams Continue Season Preparations (1/27/12)
Results
Hope athletes continued their preparations for the track and field season by competing in a four-team indoor invitational hosted by Calvin College on Friday. The Flying Dutchmen finished third in the men's standings while the Flying Dutch ended fourth among the women. Hope event winners were Kristen Reschke, high jump (5-1) and Christian Calyore, 60-meter hurdles (08.89).
Season Begins With Indoor Open at GVSU (1/20/12)
Results
The track and field season at Hope got underway Friday with the indoor Mike Lints Alumni Open hosted by Grand Valley State University. The non-scoring meeting attracted 900 athletes from all collegiate divisions as well as many non-attached competitors. The indoor meets are an opportunity for Hope track and field aspirants to prepare for their outdoor season which gets underway in March.
Hope athletes who placed in the top ten of an event were: Sheri McCormack, 7th in 800 meters (2:19.82); Joel Rietsema, 7th in 600 meters (1:22.76); Samuel Pederson, 4th in 5,000 meters (15:25.41); Christian Calyore, 9th in 60 meter hurdles (:08.69); men's 4x400 meter relay (Joel Rietsema, Mark Soisson, Cam Holicki, Elliott Barney), 3:28.78; Steffon Mayhue, 6th in long jump (21-4); Jonas Lawson, 8th in triple jump (40-5); David Dolfin, 9th in triple jump (40-0).
2011 Season in Review
The Flying Dutchmen were co-champions of the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for the first time in a quarter
of a century. The MIAA championship was shared with rival Calvin. Hope won the mid-season
MIAA Jamboree while Calvin captured the end-of-season Field Day to cause
the co-championship. The team was coached by Kevin Cole who had been a member of Hope's last MIAA championship squad.
MIAA CHAMPIONS
Senior All-American high jumper John Donkersloot (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS) successfully defended his MIAA title by clearing 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
Senior Cameron Lampkin (Troy/Berkley HS) repeated as MIAA champion in the 100-meter dash (:10.98). Hope was one-two-three in this race with Jacob Hurrell (freshman from Cadillac/Cadillac HS) and Kyle VanderVeen (senior from Alto/Caledonia HS) finishing second (:11.11) and third (:11.18) respectively.
Senior Nick Rinck (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) wins the 400-meter hurdles for the fourth consecutive year (:54.17). He becomes the first Hope male track athlete in win the same event at the MIAA Field Day all four years.
Senior Cameron Lampkin (Troy/Berkley HS) repeated as MIAA champion in the 200-meters (22.69). He was a double-winner in the dashes (100/200) for the second consecutive year.

Barney (sophomore from South Holland, Ill/Seton Academy); Joel Rietsema (sophomore
from Rockford/Rockford HS); and Nick Rinck (senior from Hudsonville/Hudsonville
HS), 3:22.70.
Senior Nick Rinck of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS) was honored the Most Valuable Field
Performer in the MIAA after winning the 400-meter hurdles a fourth consecutive
year. He was joined on the All-MIAA team by senior John
Donkersloot (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS); freshman Jake Hurrell
(Cadillac/Cadillac HS); senior Cameron Lampkin (Troy/Berkley HS); and
junior Andrew McKeachie (Milford/Milford HS).
Senior John Donkersloot of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS) achieved NCAA All-America
recognition for the third time in his career by finishing fourth at the Division
III national championships. He cleared 6 feet, 9 inches. Donkersloot finished
third at nationals as both a sophomore and junior.
Senior Nick Rinck of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS) also oompeted at nationals
in the 400-meter hurdles, but did not place. He ended his career as the Hope
recordholder in the event (:52.54).
The Flying Dutchmen were honored for academic excellence by the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association. Honored as national Scholar Athletes was
senior John Donkersloot of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS). He was also named a first team Academic All-American for a second consecutive year and was presented a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
