FRIDAY HEADLINES

  • Even the disqualification of a winning relay wasn't enough to slow Kenyon's march to a 26th consecutive NCAA Division III men's swimming and diving championship as the Lords on Friday expanded their lead in the team standings to more than 100 points. The judges deliberated several minutes after the finish of the 200 medley relay before disqualifying the Lords for jumping on the event's fourth leg. The relay victory went to Emory which ended Kenyon's streak of 26 consecutive relay championships. Hardly deterred, Kenyon went on to win three individual and the night's final event, the 800 freestyle relay. Included was a one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke. Heading into Saturday's final day of competition, Kenyon has 382 points while Emory is a distant second at 281.5. Next is Johns Hopkins with 228 followed by Williams 191, Denison 170, Gustavus Adolphus 139, Washington, Mo. 119, Carnegie Mellon 109, MIT 103.5 and Wheaton 94.5.

  • Defending national champions won in three of Friday's events -- Kenyon junior Andrejs Duda in the 100 butterfly (:49.38), Carnegie-Mellon senior Chris Pearson in the 200 freestyle (1:38.67), and Williams junior Will Cunningham in the 100 backstroke (:55.62). For Duda it was his second gold medal of the meet having won the 200 IM on Thursday.

  • Kenyon senior Elliot Rushton also won his second event, edging teammate Travis Brennion in the 400 individual medley. Rushton was clocked in 3:56.06 while Brennion ended at 3:56.61. On Thursday Rushton won the 500 freestyle.

  • Kenyon also had a one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke with sophomores Davis Zarins and Joseph Gosselar being clocked in :55.62 and :56.22 respectively.

  • Kenyon won the 800-yard freestyle relay for the ninth consecutive year with an all-senior team of Elliot Rushton, Thomas Ashby, Paul Kaminsky and Gabriel Rodrigues (3:42.83).

  • So far every Holland Aquatic Center pool swimming record has been broken. The same was true a week ago when Hope hosted the women's championship.
