Friday Recap
March 11, 2005

EMORY BUILDS LEAD
Some Champs Repeat;
Others Aren't as Lucky

  • Emory continues to top the field after the second day of competition at the NCAA Division III women's swimming and diving championships being hosted by Hope College at the Holland Aquatic Center. Through Friday's competition Emory, which is bidding for its first team championship, has 293.5 points followed by four-time defending champion Kenyon with 215. Rounding out the top ten are Denison 192.5, Williams 187.5, Amherst 181, Washington, Mo. 144.5, Carleton 135, Colby 115, Johns Hopkins 106 and Middlebury 106. A total of 47 schools have scored.

  • Jill Boo of Denison won the 100 yard butterfly (:56.69) for the third year in-a-row. A Denison swimmer has now won the 100 butterfly each of the last five years.

  • Calvin sophomore Becky Weima spoiled the bid of Carleton's Marie Marsman to win the 200 freestyle for a third consecutive year. In fact, Marsman was defeated in the 200 free by a Division III opponent for the first time in her collegiate career. Weima was timed in 1:50.29.

  • Williams' junior Lindsay Payne won the 100 breaststroke for the third time in her career (1:02.88). In the prelims she set a Division III meet record of 1:02.75.
