2009-10 Season in Review

The Flying Dutch were host to Special Olympians from throughout
western Michigan at the DeVos Fieldhouse on Monday, Feb. 8

Flying Dutch Continue Road Success (2/6/10)

The Flying Dutch extended their winning streak to 11 in-a-row and improved to 20-1 overall by defeating Alma 71-60 on Saturday afternoon. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch moved to 12-0 in the MIAA. The Flying Dutch have now won 20-or-more in a season for 12 straight years posting an amazing 285-36 (89%) record during that span.

Playing their third consecutive road game, the Flying Dutch took awhile to get in synch. Hope led 18-17 midway through the first half and then reeled off 10 straight points to take the lead for good. The Flying Dutch led 39-29 at intermission and by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Center Carrie Snikkers had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Team scoring honors went to Jenny Cowen with 14 points in four three-pointers. Erika Bruinsma blocked six shots.

Flying Dutch Expand MIAA Lead (2/3/10)

The Flying Dutch expanded their lead in the MIAA race by defeating rival Calvin 61-50 Wednesday night. In a showdown of nationally ranked teams, the #4 Flying Dutch outscored the #9 Knights 12-0 over the last five minutes to gain the come-from-behind victory. Hope improves to 11-0 in the MIAA while Calvin slips to 10-2 with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch are 19-1 overall.

The Flying Dutch squandered an 11-point second half lead and fell behind 50-49 with 5:35 remaining. Hope scored the final 12 points of the half highlighted by two three-point baskets from opposite corners by freshman Liz Ellis.

Junior post Carrie Snikkers record a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ellis and senior Philana Greene each scored 10 points.

Flying Dutch Continue Winning Ways (1/30/10)

The Flying Dutch remained unbeaten in conference play by coasting past Olivet 77-41 on Saturday. Coach Brian Morehouse's nationally ranked Dutch are 9-0 in the MIAA and 18-1 overall. Hope travels to Calvin next Wednesday in a showdown of nationally ranked teams that will go a long way toward determining the MIAA race.

The Flying Dutch limited the host Comets to 25% shooting for the game and finished with a 50-39 advantage on rebounds.

Philana Greene led Hope in scoring with 12 points while Lizz Ellis added 10.

Flying Dutch Stay Unbeaten in League Play (1/27/10)

The Flying Dutch turned the corner on their conference season by posting a 50-36 victory over visiting Trine on Wednesday. For the second time this season the Flying Dutch held the Thunder under 40 points in moving to 9-0 in the MIAA and 17-1 overall. The DeVos Fieldhouse victory was Hope's 61st in-a-row, the longest in NCAA Division III.

Hope's defense held Trine to just six baskets in each half and 23% shooting for the entire game. The Flying Dutch also struggled offensively behind 36% shooting.

Rachael Kutney led the Flying Dutch with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting. A game highlight was the return of junior center Carrie Snikkers who had missed the last eight games with a foot injury.

Home Floor Win Streak Reaches 60 (1/21/10)

Division three's longest current home floor winning streak reached 60 games Thursday night as the Flying Dutch remained undefeated in MIAA play by coasting to a 77-53 victory over Adrian. Midway through the conference season coach Brian Morehouse's are a perfect 8-0 against the MIAA and 16-1 overall. The Flying Dutch are fourth in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division III coaches poll.

The Flying Dutch become the sixth team in NCAA Division III history to put together a home winning streak of at least 60 games. The alltime Division III women’s basketball record is 88 in-a-row by Rust, Miss. in the 1980s. Streaks of 60-or-more home wins are: Rust (88), William Smith (80), Southern Maine (77), Bowdoin (76), Washington-St. Louis (70) and Scranton (64).

The game against Adrian was never in doubt. The Flying Dutch raced to a 21-0 lead in the first seven minutes behind 7-for-8 shooting compared to Adrian 0-for-8. Hope led 47-21 at halftime.

The entire team received generous playing minutes. Freshman Courtney Kust led the team with 13 points Erika Bruinsma had 11. Both shot 5-of-7 from the floor. The Flying Dutch forced 27 Adrian turnovers, including 12 steals.

Flying Dutch Gain Lead in MIAA Race;
Defeat Rival Calvin in Rivalry Game

The Flying Dutch gained sole possession of first place in the MIAA women's basketball race by defeating rival Calvin 73-58 Tuesday night before a record DeVos Fieldhouse record.

A crowd of 3,177 fans witnessed the showdown of nationally ranked teams. The win extends Hope's home floor winning streak to 59 consecutive games. Ranked fifth in this week's USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, the Flying Dutch improved to 7-0 in the MIAA and 14-1.

The Flying Dutch used a relentness defense to seize command of the game in the first half. Forcing Calvin to commit 18 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, including 18 off steals by Hope players, the Flying Dutch gained a 35-18 halftime lead. At one point in the game Hope had outscored Calvin 30-0 off turnovers.

Erika Bruinsma led Hope with 12 points while Philana Greene added 11 and Jenny Cowen tallied 10. Hope's offensive success was highlighted by the team's eight three-point baskets from six players. Hope's bench outscored Calvin's 31-10. Freshman Meredith Kussmaul led the Dutch on the board with eighth rebounds while Philana Greene was credited with six steals.

The Flying Dutch will be back in action already on Thursday hosting Adrian.

Flying Dutch Gain Tie for MIAA Lead (1/6/09)

The Flying Dutch remained unbeaten in MIAA play and moved into a tie for first place in the conference race behind a 79-58 victory over Alma on Wednesday. Both Hope and Calvin stand 3-0 in league play.

Hope used a pair of runs to gain a 40-28 halftime lead. Alma scored the game's first two baskets, but Hope responded with a 9-0 run. Alma led 17-15 midway through the half, but another Hope run, this one for 13 points, gave Hope a commanding 28-17 advantage. Hope opened the second half with a 12-2 scoring advantage.

Freshman Liz Ellis scored a collegiate career high 15 points, including three three-pointers. Erika Bruinsma added 14 points.

Flying Dutch Bounce Back With Win (12/29/09)
After suffering their first loss of the season, the Flying Dutch bounced back to post a convincing 87-57 victory over Piedmont, Ga. on Tuesday in the consolation game of the Oglethorpe, Ga. holiday tournament. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch improved to 10-1 on the season.

On Monday the Flying Dutch were defeated by Carthage, Wisc. 51-47. On Tuesday the Flying Dutch nearly equaled their Monday offensive output in each half, scoring 45 points before intermission and 42 more in the final 20 points.

With All-American Carrie Snikkers sidelined with a foot injury, coach Morehouse continued to use these tournament games to identify other contributors. Senior co-captains Philana Greene and Jenny Cowens responded, Greene with her second consecutive double-double (19 points and 12 rebounds) and Cowens with 11 points. Freshman Courtney Kust recorded her first collegiate double-figure scoring performance with 12 points and junior Abby Phillips scored 13 points off the bench.

Midway through the second half Hope had a 10 point lead, 58-48. The Flying Dutch went on a 15-point run over the next four minutes.

Hope grabbed a season-best 62 rebounds and had 23 steals.

Flying Dutch Suffer First Defeat (12/28/09)

The Flying Dutch suffered their first defeat of the season on Monday bowing to Carthage, Wisc. 51-47 in a first round game of the Oglethorpe, Ga. tournament. It was a game between two nationally ranked teams, the Flying Dutch #1 and Carthage #15 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. Both teams are now 9-1.

The Flying Dutch entered the game without All-America center Carrie Snikkers who has been sidelined with a foot injury. The length of her recovery has not been determined.

Both teams stuggled offensively. The Flying Dutch missed their first 17 shots and held a slim 19-17 halftime lead as the teams combined for 12-for-63 (19%) shooting. Hope led 45-42 with 3:51 left in the game, but the Dutch would make just one basket the rest of the way.

Two Hope players finished with double-doubles -- senior Philana Green with 13 points and 11 rebounds and junior Erika Bruinsma with 12 points and a dozen rebounds. Freshman Meredith Kussmaul grabbed 10 rebounds.

Hope will play in Tuesday's consolation game.

Flying Dutch Win Showdown of Ranked Teams (12/19/09)

In a showdown of nationally ranked teams, the number one rated Flying Dutch defeated #15 University of Chicago 70-51 to win the championship of Hope's holiday tournament on Saturday. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch will enter the holiday season with a 9-0 record after posting their 57th consecutive home floor victory.

The Flying Dutch used outstanding first-half defense to set the tone, forcing 12 turnovers, including eight steals, en route to building a 37-27 intermission lead. The visiting Maroons cut the Hope lead to six points, 45-39, with 12 minutes left to play, but the Flying Dutch responded with six straight points to take command for good. Hope led by as many as 22 points.

Junior center Carrie Snikkers was selected the tournament's outstanding player. She scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Senior guard Jenny Cowen was an all-tournament honoree with a championship game performance of 10 points. three assists and only one turnover in 24 minutes. Freshman Meredith Kussmaul was also in double figures with 13 points.

Stage Set for Key Game in Holiday Classic (12/18/09)

The stage is set for a showdown of nationally ranked teams after both Hope and the Maroons of the University of Chicago posted victories Friday in the semi-finals of the Flying Dutch Holiday Classic. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch topped Finlandia 102-44 while Chicago defeated neighboring Lake Forest, Ill. 71-54.

Saturday's game poses the first serious test of the top-ranked Flying Dutch (8-0) this season. The Chicago Maroons (7-2) were ranked 15th among NCAA Division III teams this past week. The teams will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Flying Dutch jumped off to a 26-0 lead against Finlandia and held a 53-17 halftime advantage. Fifteen Hope players scored and 14 grabbed a rebound as the Flying Dutch shot 56% and held a 45-33 rebounding edge. Erika Bruinsma led the Dutch with 13 points while Philana Greene added 11.

Flying Remain Undefeated on Season (12/12/09)

The Flying Dutch remained undefeated on the season and extended their home floor winning streak to 55 in-a-row by defeating Olivet 79-50 Saturday night. Winning their second MIAA game within 24 hours, the Flying Dutch improved to 2-0 in league games and to 7-0 overall.

The Flying Dutch never trailed and led 44-17 at halftime behind 60% shooting. In the end 14 players were in the scorebook and 1q5 had at least one rebound. Carrie Snikkers and Liz Ellis shared scoring honors with 11 points apiece.

Flying Dutch Extend Home Winning Streak (12/2/09)

In what had been billed ahead of time as Hope's first major test of the basketball season turned into another rout by the top-ranked Flying Dutch. Nearby Aquinas had won seven-of-eight contests coming into DeVos Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. The Saints left having suffered an 86-53 loss.

Coach Brian Morehouse's undefeated Dutch won their fifth game of the season and extended their home floor winning streak to 54 consecutive games on a day in which they continued to be ranked as the number one team in NCAA Division III by USA Today/ESPN.

The Flying Dutch were simply stunning in the first half scoring a fieldhouse record 54 points over the first 20 minutes behind eight three-point baskets. Hope led 54-28 at intermission giving coach Morehouse the opportunity to go deep into his bench for extended minutes. Fourteen players scored and 15 grabbed at least one rebound.

Junior center Carrie Snikkers recorded her 13th career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. She also blocked six shots and was credited with three steals. Freshmen Liz Ellis and Meredith Kussmaul each had collegiate-high scoring performances with 14 and 11 points respectively.

Top-Ranked Flying Dutch Stay Unbeaten (11/24/09)

On a day when the Flying Dutch would become the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, it took a second half rally Tuesday night to extend the team's season record to 4-0 and home floor winning streak to 53 consecutive games.

The USA Today/ESPN national pollsters gave the Flying Dutch six of its eight first place voters. The poll is conducted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Tied with visiting Defiance in the closing minutes of the first half, the Flying Dutch got a late three-point basket to go ahead 37-34 at intermission. The Flying Dutch scored the first 11 points of the second half and never looked back enroute to the 83-60 triumph.

Junior Carrie Snikkers set a fieldhouse record with six blocked shots and scored a game-high 18 points. Senior Philana Greene had another solid game scoring 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting, grabbing seven rounds, dishing off five assists and making six steals. Also scoring in double figures was Erika Bruinsma with 12 points.

Flying Dutch Coast to Season's Third Win (11/21/09)

Three victories in five days have marked the start of the season. Coach Brian Morehouse's Flying Dutch extended their home floor winning streak to 52 in-a-row by soundly defeating Wittenberg, Ohio in the championship game of Hope's Tipoff Classic, 80-49. It came on the heels of Friday's 86-38 victory over Rochester, Mich. and a season-opening 82-70 win over Madonna.

Once again it was a total team effort with every member of the 16-player squad seeing at least eight minutes of playing time. The balance is reflected by the selection of senior Philana Greene and junior Carrie Snikkers as co-most valuable players of the tournament. Junior Erika Bruinsma joined her teammates on the all-tournament team.

This game was never in doubt as Hope raced to a 9-1 lead, held Wittenberg without a basket over the first six minutes of play and gained a 43-17 halftime advantage. The visiting Tigers were just 3-for-27 in the first half.

Freshman Meredith Kussmaul came off the bench to lead all scorers with 15 points while Snikkers added 12 and Bruinsma tallied 10 behind 5-for-5 shooting. Greene dished off six assists while Snikkers blocked six shots.

Flying Dutch Roll to Tipoff Victory (11/20/09)

The Flying Dutch cruised to an 86-38 victory over Rochester, Mich. in the second game of Friday's Hope Tipoff Classic at DeVos Fieldhouse. In Friday's other game, Wittenberg, Ohio topped Robert Morris, Ill., 66-53. Hope will play Wittenberg at 3 p.m. Saturday, preceded by Rochester versus Robert Morris.

Coach Brian Morehouse's Flying Dutch (2-0) have now won 51 consecutive games on their home floor. Against Rochester the Flying Dutch jumped off to a 13-0 start and held a 45-10 halftime advantage, allowing Morehouse to go deep into his bench. Philana Greene led Hope with 12 points while Mirandas DeKuiper added 10. Hope scored 46 points off 38 Rochester turnovers and held a 33-11 advantage in baskets.

Hope led by as many as 30 points (70-40) before Madonna made a late run to come within 11 points with 1:45 remaining. Carrie Snikkers led Hope with 17 points while Erika Bruinsma added 11.

MIAA Basketball Coaches Predict Races
Defending MIAA champion Calvin and tournament champion Hope have been installed as preseason co-favorites in the 2009-10 MIAA men's basketball race, while defending champion Hope is the preseason selection to repeat as women's basketball champions. Calvin and Hope each received four votes in the annual preseason men's poll released today, while the Flying Dutch picked up six first place votes in the women's poll.

2009-10 Pre-Season Outlook

The defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champion Flying Dutch return a solid core of experienced players that is complemented by a promising group of players new to the varsity.

Coach Brian Morehouse begins his 14th season at the helm of a team that has won 20 or more games a school-record 11 straight years. The Flying Dutch posted a 28-2 record in 2008-09 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III championships for the second year in-a-row. The team was eliminated from the tournament by the eventual national champion for the second straight season. Morehouse ranks among the winningest active NCAA Division III coaches with a 316-58 (84%) record. His teams the past five seasons posted a 138-12 mark.

This year's roster includes nine returning letterwinners. There are six freshman prospects joined by two sophomores, six juniors and two seniors.

Tri-captains of the team are senior guard Philana Greene of Grandville (Grandville HS), senior guard Jenny Cowen of Dexter (Dexter HS), and junior center Carrie Snikkers of Jenison (Unity Christian HS). All three players have received All-MIAA first team honors during their career, Greene in 2007-08 and Cowen and Snikkers in 2008-09. Snikkers was also named a consensus Division III All-American a year ago.

Other returning letterwinners include junior guard Miranda DeKuiper of Ludington (Ludington HS), junior guard Abby Phillips of Wayland (Wayland HS), sophomore guard Allie Cerone of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton North HS), junior guard Lauren Geers of Scottville (Mason County Central HS), junior forward Erika Bruinsma of Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), and junior center Rachael Kutney of St. Clair Shores (Lake Shore HS). Sophomore guard Brooke Nienhuis of Zeeland (Zeeland West HS) was a member of the junior varsity a year ago.

The six freshman prospects include guard Olivia Allore of Muskegon (Muskegon Catholic Central HS), guard Liz Ellis of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS), forward Courtney Kust of Cincinnati, Ohio (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy), center Ashley Bauman of Manistee (Manistee Catholic Central HS), forward Jillian Nichols of Brighton (Brighton HS), and center Meredith Kussmaul of Hartland (Hartland HS).

The Flying Dutch will play eight of their first nine games at home at the DeVos Fieldhouse where they carry a 49- game home court winning streak.

Hope Tops NCAA DIII in Home Attendance 6/2/09)
The Hope women's basketball team led the nation in average home attendance among all NCAA Division III programs during the 2008-09 season. It marked the second time since moving to DeVos Fieldhouse four years ago that the Flying Dutch have led the nation's 420 Division III women's basketball programs in home attendance. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch averaged 1,269 fans over 17 home dates.

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) ranked third among Division III conferences, averaging 422 fans over a cumulative 101 home dates. Division III members as a whole averaged 239 fans per home date (5,029 home games). Division I members as a whole averaged 1,612 fans per home date.

The Flying Dutch also led Division III in home attendance in 2005-06, their inaugural year at DeVos, averaging 1,329 fans per game game. In 2006-07 Hope ranked fourth with an average of 1,224 fans and in 2007-08 was second at 1,107.

The Flying Dutch, who posted an overall 28-2 record, were 17-0 on their home court. The season's largest crowd (2,575) watched the Flying Dutch defeat Saint Mary's to avenge their only MIAA loss of the season, 84-59 on January 31. Hope's four-season record at DeVos Fieldhouse is 60-1. In 13 seasons under coach Morehouse the Flying Dutch are 173-20 (.896) on their home floor.

The Flying Dutch will enter the 2009-10 season with a home floor winning streak of 49 in-a-row. The season will begin on Nov. 17 with a home game against Madonna.

Flying Dutch Compete in NCAA Tournament
The 08-09 Flying Dutch played in the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth year in-a-row and for the 11th time in school history. The Flying Dutch advanced to the Elite Eight before bowing to eventual national champion George Fox College of Oregon, 58-46. The Flying Dutch were national champions in 1990 and 2006. In 07-08 Hope also advanced to the Elite Eight before bowing to eventual national champion Howard Payne, Tex. Hope has an all-time record of 20-9 (.696) in NCAA games.

Carrie Snikkers an All-American
Hope's Alltime All-Americans
Sophomore center Carrie Snikkers has been named a consensus Division III All-American. She has been named to the 10-member State Farm Division III All-American team by the National Association of Women's Basketball Coaches and is being honored by two Division III groups, D3hoops.com (fourth team) and DIIInews (third team). She is the fourth Hope women's basketball player to be named an All-American, the third this decade. Snikkers of Jenison, Mich. (Unity Christian HS) was voted the most valuable player in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) this season. The Flying Dutch were conference champions, advanced to the elite eight of the NCAA tournament and posted an overall 28-2 record.

Coach Morehouse Honored
Coach Brian Morehouse has been named the regional coach of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for the third time in his 13-year career. Eight NCAA Division III coaches from across the country are being honored and are now eligible for national coach of the year recognition. Morehouse was named the national coach of the year in 2006. He has guided the Flying Dutch to a 316-58 record over his career, including 28-2 in 08-09, with eight conference championships and nine trips to the NCAA tournament. He entered the 2008-09 season ranked third among Division III coaches by winning percentage.

MIAA Awards Include MVP Honor
MIAA coaches named sophomore Carrie Snikkers of Jenison (Unity Christian HS) as the season's top player. Snikkers led the Flying Dutch to the MIAA championship and the conference tournament title, averaging 13.7 points per game. She also led the MIAA in field goal percentage (.526) and was second in the league in blocked shots (1.63 per game). She was joined on the All-MIAA first first by junior guard Jenny Cowen (Dexter/Dexter HS). Named to the All-MIAA second team were junior Philana Greene (Grandville/Grandville HS) and senior Courtney Knox (Mattawan/Mattawan HS).
