Brandon Guernsey '03

Major / Minor: French and International Studies / Biology

Study Abroad Location: Bamako (SIT)

Program Duration: Spring 2002

Favorite Memory:
My spring semester in Mali provided a look at the rich culture of West Africa in a totally different and unique environment than Paris and Europe. This SIT program was based in the capital city of Bamako and focused on the theme of gender and development. Classes consisted of special guest lecturers and visits to nearby villages and local aid organizations. The program also allowed for a two-week excursion throughout the country, literally to Timbuktu and back again! The last month of the program involved an independent study project on a subject of my own choosing. Working closely with the National Museum of Mali in Bamako, I researched the traditional Bambara secret initiation societies, but more specifically the role of the masks that are worn to accompany these ceremonies.

Advice: Studying abroad was an incredible eye opening, life-changing experience for me. I would highly recommend that everyone go on an off-campus program sometime during their four years at Hope. When else in your life will you ever have such an incredible opportunity to see the world? The experience will only benefit your future endeavors.
