Constructed in June of 2005, the Hope College
Server Room occupies approximately 420 square
feet of space in Durfee Hall. With few exceptions,
all of the College's multi-user servers are located
here.
The room was designed to support approximately
16 desktop-style servers. There
is also rack space for network equipment and
several rack mount-style servers. The desktop servers
are organized
into 4 groups of 4 systems, with each group
sharing a keyboard, 17" LCD display, and
optical mouse using a KVM-style switch. Tape
backup drives
are shared as appropriate and distributed throughout
the room as necessary. Three separate tape storage
areas (both on campus and off) are utilized.
Each server, KVM switch, and tape drive is labeled
with its name, specific functions or application,
and relevant technical
details.
Fed with redundant gigabit fiber optic lines
from separate nodes on the campus backbone, this
area is maintained by two air conditioners
and includes at least one dedicated isolated-ground
electrical circuit per system. All data cable (Category
6) is fully exposed, color-coded, and is delivered
throughout the room via wall-mounted J-hooks.
A 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 3870 is utilized.
Access to this room is limited. Security
measures include restricted keys, electronic card
keys, and personalized identification codes. |
