THE PERFORMERS
MARIE BLAUWKAMP MARIE
BLAUWKAMP graduated from Hope College in 1962, majoring in piano and
music education. Marie studied piano with Anthony Kooiker, and organ
with various teachers in the area. She lives in Zeeland and has four
children. She taught vocal music for twenty-six years at Byron Center
Christian and Jenison Public Schools. Currently, Marie is an organist
and handbell director at Community Reformed and Bethel Christian Reformed
Churches in Zeeland. In the summer Marie will be organist at Newberry
United Methodist Church when she visits the North woods.
SARA BOLKEMA graduated
summa cum laude from Hope College in 2004 with a degree in instrumental
music education. A lifelong musician, Sara began studying piano
at age 7, violin at age 9, and organ at age 19. While at Hope, she
studied organ with Huw Lewis; piano with Joan Conway, Mansoon Han
Kim, and Soyeon Park; and violin with Mihai and Deborah Craioveanu.
Sara was a two-time winner of Hope's Concerto/Aria Competition,
performing on piano in 2003 and on organ in 2004. In her senior
year, she was the concertmaster of Hope's Symphonette and Orchestra.
Sara is currently the director of orchestras at Grandville Middle
School, an assistant organist at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed
Church in Grand Rapids, and a co-principal violinist in the Holland
Symphony. In addition, this summer she will begin studies for a
Master's degree in music education from VanderCook College of Music.
ELIZABETH CLAAR earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance
at The University of Michigan, where she studied organ with James Kibbie
and Robert Glasgow, and harpsichord with Edward Parmentier. She also
completed a certificate in music theory pedagogy. Elizabeth received
her Master of Music degree from The University of Michigan and her Bachelor
of Arts from Houghton College in New York. Elizabeth recently returned
from Armenia, where she spent the 2006-07 school year with her husband,
Victor, who was teaching on a Fulbright Fellowship. Besides experiencing
Armenian culture, she also researched Armenian organ music. Back in the
United States, Elizabeth combines church work, teaching, and performance
in a multi-faceted musical career. Organist at Trinity Lutheran Church
in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she teaches organ to students of all ages,
and she is passionate about introducing the organ to young people. Besides
serving as Dean of the Holland Area Chapter of the American Guild of
Organists, Elizabeth is directing an AGO Pipe Organ Encounter for teenagers,
to be held at Hope College in July 2008. In addition to teaching privately,
she teaches organ and theory at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids.
Elizabeth performs frequently as a soloist, having given concerts in
many states and in Armenia, and as a staff accompanist at Hope College.
SUSAN DEKAM completed
her undergraduate studies in 2002 with a major in piano, studying
under Joan Conway, at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She began
studying organ as a secondary instrument with Huw Lewis, but it
soon became her principal interest. In 2004, Susan earned her Master
of Music degree from the University of Michigan where she studied
with Robert Glasgow, piano with Louis Nagel, and harpsichord with
Edward Parmentier. As an organist, pianist, and harpsichordist,
Susan has become a well rounded musician not only through her solo
concertizing on all three instruments, but also as an accompanist,
chamber musician, and private piano teacher. In addition to being
the recipient of numerous prizes and awards for her performances
on organ and piano, she has also been a finalist in the Music Teachers
National Association Collegiate Organ Competition (2002) and the
Miami International Organ Competition (2006). Susan is a doctoral
candidate in organ performance at the University of Michigan where
she studies with James Kibbie. Currently, she serves as Associate
Director of Music at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Dallas,
Texas and is a member of the piano faculty at Coppell Conservatory
in Coppell, Texas.

Avenue Christian Reformed Church of Jenison, MI, where he is Worship
Director. In September 2005, Chris was appointed both organ scholar
and choral scholar at historic Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church,
Grand Rapids, where he assists Dr. Gregory Crowell. Chris is a
member of the Grand Rapids AGO chapter for whom he is Secretary.
Chris is working on his undergraduate degree in organ performance
at Hope College of Holland, MI, where he studies organ with Dr.
Huw Lewis and piano with Charles Aschbrenner. He has participated
in master classes conducted by such well-known artists as Dame
Gillian Weir, David Higgs, Janette Fishell, and Felix Hell. Chris
has toured Canada as the principal accompanist of the Hope College
Chapel Choir, and recently gave a recital at Central Synagogue
of New York City. After completing his undergraduate degree, Chris
intends to go to graduate school, and then to have a career as
a church musician.

incense, reading books on mysticism, promoting new music for the
organ, and studying the life and works of Olivier Messiaen.
ABIGAIL ROCKWOOD began
her organ studies at Hope College with Dr. Huw Lewis. At Hope,
she majored in music, with minors in French, English, and mathematics.

organist at Hope Church (Reformed Church in America) in Holland.
THE ORGANS OF DIMNENT CHAPEL
Dimnent Memorial Chapel boasts two pipe organs. The large organ in the
front (‘Chancel Organ’) was built by the E. M. Skinner
Organ Company of Boston, and installed in 1929, the year the Chapel
was completed. The organ in the rear (‘Gallery Organ’)
was built in 1970 by Pels and van Leeuwen of Alkmaar, the Netherlands.
The Skinner organ recently underwent a two-year historic restoration
in the workshop of the Thompson-Allen Company of New Haven, Connecticut.
It was re-dedicated in January 2007.
ORGAN STUDY AT HOPE
Hope College is a four-year Christian liberal arts college affiliated
with the Reformed Church in America. Organ study is available to all
students on campus, regardless of their academic major. The Organ Division
has a long and distinguished history of inviting to campus guest performers
of international standing who come not only to perform but also to
teach and meet informally with students. The most recent visiting artists
at Hope include Olivier Latry (Notre Dame, Paris), Margaret Phillips
(The Royal College of Organists, London), and Diane Bish (world renowned
television recording artist). Beyond studying and interacting with
famous visiting artists, opportunities also exist for students to study
off campus. Each year the department and friends of the organ program
provide funds to assist students in this endeavor. Later this month
organ students will visit Paris, France, where they will play the great
organs of Notre Dame, Ste. Clothilde, and Saint-Germain, churches where
Louis Vierne, César Franck, and the Couperin family were organists.
The College offers a wide variety of generous need- and generous talent-based
scholarships. For more information about the organ program, call the
Department at (616) 395-7650.
