The 147th Hope College Commencement address was delivered by Dr. Heather Sellers, professor of English, who presented “And your homework is…” on Sunday, May 6. Dr. Sellers has been a member of the Hope faculty since 1995, and teaches poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. A nationally acclaimed author, she is also highly regarded as a mentor by her students. In 2011, the graduating class presented her with the “Hope Outstanding Professor Educator” (H.O.P.E.) Award.

Dr. Susanna Childress of the Hope College English faculty has received the 2012 award in poetry from the Society of Midland Authors for her collection “Entering the House of Awe.”

Jack Ridl, professor emeritus of English at Hope College, has won the 2012 Gary Gildner Poetry Award from the I-70 Review literary magazine.

Dr. David S. Reynolds, who is a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will present the address “Mightier than the Sword: Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Battle for America” on Tuesday, April 10, at 4 p.m. at Hope College in the Fried/Hemenway Auditorium of the Martha Miller Center for Global Communication.

The Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series of Hope College will feature Susanna Childress and Bich Minh Nguyen on Tuesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.

An address by internationally recognized Shakespeare scholar Dr. John Cox of the Hope College English faculty will help mark the closing week of the national traveling exhibition “Manifold Greatness: The Creation and Afterlife of the King James Bible.”

Dr. Virginia Beard and Dr. Ernest Cole of the Hope College faculty are among the 15 scholars nationwide chosen to participate in the 2012 Lilly Fellows Program Summer Seminar for College and University Teachers, “Teaching Peace and Reconciliation: Theory and Practice in Northern Ireland.”

Photographic artistry showing abandoned industry within natural vistas, mathematics and the Arab Spring, prayer in Shakespeare, research on the nanoscale, seeing and mobile phones, and student entrepreneurship will all be featured during the annual Hope College Winter Happening on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Dr. William Pannapacker, associate professor of English and director of the Mellon Scholars Program at Hope College, is one of only 14 scholars nationwide appointed to the Digital Humanities Council of the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE).
